Trailduster grille to 90 W-250!

Postby Erska » Fri Nov 18, 2011 8:43 am

Hi Guys!

I'm picking an early trailduster grille with round lights . This is the same type of grille here:

Anyway. HOW much I have to do sheet metal work to get these fit?

I know that front fenders are boxy on the facelift model and different than the pre facelift one.

Give me some tips and thought. Thanks!

Why not just get the old style fenders and hood and sell you hood and fenders you have. I think that would be the easiest.

The old style fenders do not match the body newer line below the mirrors on the doors.

That's true. They dont match with the doors and the bed.

72-80 body style is just so much nicer than the one we have. Awesome bodylines compared to these.

Anyway, I'm picking up the grille on Friday for free and I'm going to discuss with my friend who does sheet metal bodywork for living. We'll see how big mod it is.

I have been thinking of getting 72-80 doors and fenders also + getting a stepside bed and stretching it to 8 foot long but I think it's too much work for my needs.

I'm going to answer to myself if someone ELSE finds this helpful.

Grilles pre facelift will fit with no problems to our body style!

The lower sheet metal below the grille in our models does not fit without a little cutting. And you have to do some little fabricating on the grille attachment points. Otherwise it fits in our body lines. They have kept it the same on the front.

And if you do find the lower sheet metal from pre facelift you have bolt on parts+ you need round lights and their brackets. But I don't have those so I have to do little fabricating.

Heres my freebie grille. It needs some straighthening and soda blasting to get it clean. Remember it was free for me!!

I love the round headlights, but I stay the hell away from my truck's body panels. I just don't have the touch for that stuff.

I put a '79 quad headlight and core support on an '84 I had once.
It didn't line up at the flat body line and left the end of the fender slightly exposed at the corners.

IMO opinion it's less than a stellar fit.

I also ran into the issue of there being no place for turn signals and park lamps and the early lower grille support won't work on the later fenders without serious mods and the later grille support won't work on the early grille.

If you're fairly good at chopping and splicing tin, the lower support won't be too bad to do, otherwise I'd just mount signal lights behind the grille and be happy.

Mark.

Well despite all sceptic attitudes in here. It fits to my eye like gold!!

All I need is universal turning signals under the grille like the early 70's had. If you can get the lower sheet metal part under the grille from the early 70's model you can get the grille more easily on its place and the markers :) I have bright park lamps inside the 7" Hella Halogen H4 lights with 100 Watt high low beam bulbs.

Here's the pics!
