The main issue with going to HIDs is to make sure you get the projector housing. Your light pattern will be all over the place with most kits and they won't meet the law. Even though Texas does not require checking the headlight patterns during a vehicle inspection the state and fed regs say:
ยง 547.3215. USE OF FEDERAL STANDARD. Unless specifically prohibited by this chapter, lighting, reflective devices, and associated equipment on a vehicle or motor vehicle must comply with:
(1) the current federal standards in 49 C.F.R. Section 571.108; or
(2) the federal standards in that section in effect, if any, at the time the vehicle or motor vehicle was manufactured.
49 CFR Sec 571.108 Standard No. 108; Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.
S5. Requirements.
S5.1 Required motor vehicle lighting equipment.
S5.1.1 Except as provided in succeeding paragraphs of this S5.1.1, each vehicle shall be equipped with at least the number of lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment specified in Tables I and III and S7, as applicable.
S4. Definitions.....
Replaceable bulb headlamp means a headlamp comprising a bonded lens and reflector assembly and one or two replaceable headlamp light sources, except that a headlamp conforming to paragraph S7.8.5.2 or paragraph S7.8.5.3 may have a lens designed to be replaceable.
Visually/optically aimable headlamp means a headlamp which is designed to be visually/optically aimable in accordance with the requirements of paragraph S7.8.5.3 of this standard.
So state law defaults to 49 CFR and reading the standards in 49 CFR Sec 571.108, HID retrofits plopped into Halogen housings would do not the beam pattern requirements for replacement lamps. So here in Texas you could get a ticket for non-adjusted headlights or failure to use the proper headlight beam. Texas DPS did state if it was an OEM retrofit then it should comply with this regulation, blah, blah blah. I'd say go for it, just make sure you headlight patterns are adjusted appropriately. I've been reading up on doing this for my wife's Odyssey van. If you really want to read more on it try these links:
