Since it appears you are working on an '89, those chrome moldings come off by pushing UP on the trim, then using something to pry the top away from the body.
Once they are removed, it's plainly evident why you must push them up, as the clips have 2 little barbs that act as "tensioners" once the trim is in place.
These clips were used on the '81-'90 lower body trim AND the higher class tailgate trim panel (Royal, LE, etc.), also used from '81-'90.
They may also have been used on the lower body moldings found on '72-'80, which had NO vinyl impact strip glued to them, but I have not verified this, as yet.
I guess my point is, if you break the clips, they are a popular application.
