Body Moulding Restoration/Modification...

Postby CumminsPower59 » Sat May 12, 2012 8:15 am

Since most of the moulding on the 92 looked like crap, the cheesy chrome strips were peeling off and the black paint on the flares was chipping off, I figured I would to do something about it since I haven't been able to find anything aftermarket that resembled the stock stuff. I prepped them with a green scotch brite pad and bombed them with spray-can bed liner, I think it turned out pretty well :D

What do ya'll think?

Looking good!

A VW site had things to do to restore their body molding. 1 was heat gun to melt the old paint back into a shiny state. The other was using heat gun/alcohol to clean it and a black shoe polish.

Thanks Jon! It was driving me nuts having the truck missing the one piece that is on the drivers side of the box in front of the wheel well. I had the original piece, but it had fallen off and looked terrible. It was bent like a bannana too, put it in our parts washer at work (hot water type) and used my straight edge and clamped it to my work bench for a day to straighten it out. I tried to remove what was left of the chrome strip, that was a pain in the arse! I said screw it and one of my buddies said spray it with bedliner, so I did. Looked good enough that I stuck it back on with some 3M tape and did the rest of the truck with it. It's not a perfect job, but from ten feet, it looks good enough!
