What to do with a crack in my floorpan

Postby Ol_blue88 » Thu May 24, 2012 8:20 pm

So I found a six inch crack today in my passenger side floorboard. the area is rust free so I was thinkin I could stop drill the ends of the crack and then weld it back up. What do you guys think?

Sounds like a plan to me. I would weld it, then plate over it, weld it too, just for some added strength. I haven't heard of floors cracking, around here, they just rot away faster than a fat kid eats a cupcake!

I'd check all the cab mounts, there's a reason that the floor cracked. It's not a common thing, I don't think I've ever heard of one cracking.

You should see the floor in a clubcab Mark has. Truck came off of a ranch (Texas, IIRC?) and hammered to hell. It has several LONG cracks (2' plus) in the floor! So, it isn't unheard of. Depends on how the truck was used/abused/twisted. If it is still there when I get the donor, I'll try to get a pic or 2 of it. It is BAD!

Well I checked the cab mounts and everything was ok. I think the crack came from exhaust heat bc its directly above were the y pipe comes together. Hopefully I can get my hands on a welder this week. Could I get by with using the seat frame as a ground or do I need to clean a spot on the frame

A clean spot next to where you are welding is the best, but make sure you disconnect your battery, as you could possibly fry parts of your electrical system.

If you are welding on the cab ground on the cab! If there is nothing close, put the ground on a bolt and tack weld the bolt to the floor, then you can go after it. Just knock the bolt off when you are done.
Like Ike says, unhooking the ground is a very good idea.
