How much did a paint job run you?

Postby The_Head » Sun Jun 03, 2012 3:03 pm

Just wondering, as my paint is coming off pretty bad on the roof and the middle part, which was repainted before I got it is also starting to flake in places. I made it a little worse when I removed the pin stripe with a razor blade. I am thinking of changing it up a little and ditching the stripe, and changing the grey to a navy blue. I was also considering Alcoa Classics, but the dog dish/ beauty ring combo is way more classical and isn't so bling bling.

What can I expect it to cost if I just send it in and have the body shop do all everything?

My uncle is a collision repair specialist and does paint on the side. He quoted me $3k for a 2 tone and fixing the dents and dings.

Another guy I know restores muscle cars and quoted me $1k and beer but I would have to fix the body.

That Sir is one freakishly high money. For 10G's I'd ask them where in the he77 they were buying all the body molding and flares from

That's what I've been quoted on mine before. Then my sister married a paint/body man and cost me paint, filler, primer and one rebuilt 700R4

The top coat needs to come off, period. New paint is no good with peeling paint under it.

Get an air compressor (if you don't have one), an air dryer, a cheapo high volume, low pressure (HVLP) paint gun (one with the reservoir on the top to gravity feed). Make sure to get good paint and hardener.

May need a good paint stripper to get the old peeling crap off, if sanding it doesn't do a good enough/quick enough job.

Gonna do the paint on my truck myself. Never done large areas like that before, so I hope I can do a decent enough job.

Yes it was! The guy I got the $10k quote from runs a small shop in town, and it was to fix all the rust (rockers, roof, cab, new doors, one fender, straighten the box, etc)...and that was for my 91 W350. All I know is that if I were to ever have the 92 painted, it would be the donor body getting painted as the body on the 92 is getting pretty far along, rust wise. It's still no where near as bad as some, but it has rust in the pinch welds on the cab, and I don't know how that would be fixed, along with a decent amount of roof rot. Not to mention the slightly bent frame (twist) and rust scale.

It may become a donor for a crew cab conversion in a few years :(

Whatever you end up paying, make sure that they do the prep work right. Like one of the previous posters said, any paint that is already peeling off should be removed. Rust needs to be removed. It doesn't matter how nice it looks if the substrate won't hold it to the truck. Orange peel, runs, and crap in the paint can all be sanded and buffed out, but if they don't take the time and effort to prep the surface first, then it doesn't matter how nice it looks at first because it is going to look like crap when it all falls off. A lot of body shops are geared more towards insurance/collision work where they are just trying to get stuff looking decent and get it out the door. Make sure that whomever paints it is more geared toward "restoration" type paint work.

Man, I'm getting the itch to do this again. I got $3000 socked away for a new motorcycle, but the bike I have is still in pretty good shape, although it's going on 10 years old. Bottom in is, it's still got some good years left in it.

I was told I need 5K for the shops in my town. It sure would be awesome to have fresh paint on my rig though, it's got no rust and the body is pretty straight.

When you get a quote make sure of what they are planning on doing. Questions to ask.

What are you doing for prep work?? = Are they removing all the old problem paint Dodge installed?

Are they using epoxy primer on bare metal areas???

What brand of paint/ primer do they use?

Is the paint water base/ enamel/ laquer/emron??

The real big question is the first one. Bad prep work means a bad paint job. If they just plan on burning down to smooth surface and leave as much old paint as they can. You will have a paint job with a short life span. Most body shops say 1 year is all they stand behind their work. A scuff and squirt job will last a year not much more before the same underlieing orginal problems resurface.

My landlord owns a paint and body shop. I took a car to him to have the hood repainted a few years ago. About 9 months after it was done, the paint started to crack and flake off. I've been the victim of a poor prep job, I'd like to use him again since he's my landlord, but I won't do it.

You have seen the results of a scuff and squirt job. So ask many questions about the prep process. That is where the time needs to be spent. After the shops tells you the prep steps. Get it in writing. That way if they cut corners and you can prove it. You have something a court can do work with.

Just paint supplies on my truck came in around $1400.

I ended up doing my truck myself. When a body shop tells me what they want to do and it isn't the way I want it. Goodbye your wasting my time.

This is a question I had as well and I am not excited about what I've read so far. Anybody have any experience with one of those quickie places like MAACO or similar? No need for a show truck or 2 tone paint job but from what I can tell the PO either rattle can primered or rattle can painted it gray & it makes an otherwise nice truck look about 10 years older than it is. Luckily, there is no rust or body work that needs to be corrected. Or at least that I care about anyway.... Sorry if this was a "thread jack".

The few paint jobs that I've seen from places like that only lasted about a year or two, then started peeling.

For the folks that have painted DIY style, what kind of minimum CFM requirements would be needed to maintain consistent spray?
