A HVLP gun is low on requirements. You could get by with 3 to 5 CFm or less I bet.

Air sanders need 10 CFM or higher most of the time.

Macco and the other low rent spray places only spray for a cheap price. They will shoot over anything on the truck that didn't come off with a mop down of thinner. Any body work they do is extra and most of the time costs more that a normal body shop. They also use a no name paint. If it si something you plan on dumping after its painted. Go for it. If you plan on keeping it. Stay away.

The place I got a quote from didn't want to take the body to bare metal. It didn't want to use expoxy primer on bare metal. It didn't want to use my choise of paint. I was quoted $2500 for what they wanted to do. That was taking them a bare gutted cab and all the other loose sheet metal. NO bed. They also didn't want to do the firewall.

For the members that haven't seen my body rebuild here is a link. This will give you an idea of the effort and time required for a good paint job.

Beware it has a lot of pic's. If your on dial up it will take a lot of time.

After doing my own paint job in August, I can say this: you can do your paint ONLY if you are content with your skill level AND if you are not in a hurry.

Otherwise, pay someone else to do it.

Had a good chuckle at the "if you're not in a hurry" comment, we all know body men are all about meeting deadlines.

Thats why Earl Shibe and Macco are not the only shops with bad reps.

Kind of an old thread but if you sand it all off yourself with 220 or so, the bill gets quite a bit cheaper, my body guy here charges $50 dollars an hour, and just the materials the first time was 6 or $700

Yeah, I don't really want to though. I spend too much time out of town for work to be doing menial labor on my days off. It is probably worth it though, I don't make no 50 dollas an hour.

Does the local school have an auto shop or a BOCES (vocational training) program? Sometimes they will do bodywork for the price of parts.

High school may do it. Our high school here has bought Shelby cobra kits and built them the last 3-4 years. They sell raffle tickets on them and use the money to fund the next car. The wood shop class builds houses, garages and remodel jobs too. Good for the kids and great for a home owner that is poor.

Just curious on the paint thing. A couple of years or so ago there were several threads on various automotive forums about painting a car or truck using the small disposable foam rollers and quite a bit of finish sanding. Did anybody here ever try that? LOTS of folks swore it really worked and they were quite happy with the results, like dozens of people.

I can't afford a paint job or even the really good paint and where I live I don't have a shop and it's usually windy, so no spray jobs. I could do the rollar job sort of one side at a time, that's why I ask. Unfortunately this truck got a crapola paint job when purchased new by a county park dept. that included an ultra-crapola clear coat. They could have applied it with a butter knife and it would have looked better. So peeling clear, white showing through the dark kelly green and pretty much anything would be an improvement...

We roll painted our van. Long and short, for the effort we put in it turned out well.

A couple of things we learned. A van is the wrong vehicle to experiment with painting on, a lot of square footage there. To do a good job rollering takes a lot of time and patience. But what is better, spend a couple hours a night painting your truck and listening to good music, or watching garbage and lies on the idiot box?

From what i gather, its a lot of sanding. Sanding is the reason i do absolutely zero body work. I despise it.

Most of us do also. The sticker shock from a body shop helps cure that problem.
