Super singles

Super singles on my dually, yay or nay?
I just can't decide. Does anyone run them?
I finally decided to run 19.5 wheels but that's about as far as I got. I just had someone suggest a super single on the back and im not quite sure on it. Suggestions would be awesome

American eagle wheels is suppose to have a direct bolt on 20" wheels coming out soon. I will run those on my 2nd gen.

Do you tow or run empty a lot?

A super single is going to float more, so snow and rain driving is going to suck. However, it is less rotating weight than 2 steel wheels and tires so mileage should be up. Also, the ride should be better for the same reason.

Now when you have a blow out, those tires are going to cost more up front and if you tow, you cannot limp to a secure area.

Just things to think about.

I do have a horse trailer but I'm not on the road with it much anymore. I guess there's probably going to be more cons than pros to running them

No, they look dumb. And with duals, you have extra spare tire should the need arise.

My thought on them is how are you gonna replace them on the side of the road, their not a tire you just run out and buy anywhere. If it was that great of a thing I'd guess all the major truck lines would run them, but those tires are kind of a freak show around here.

Get out more Ellis. Of the 4 major truck line we get to our warehouse, 2 have converted. (Sharkey is just converting) Of the average of 40 truck to our 1 warehouse, about 25%-40% are super singles on truck and trailer.

Well I don't think I'd look like a freak show but... Lol
I will continue to think on it before I just go buy
Thanks for yalls input though :)

Converting over to semi tires is gonna cost a pretty penny so I just dont want to regret what choice I make right off the bat

That's why I'd shy away from super singles. Why do you want 22.5s? Super singles are going to be $600+ each. Regular drive and steer tires aren't going to be alot cheaper. If you are going coast to coast several times a year with a trailer in tow, it may make financial sense. If you want semi tires for looks, get direct bolt on 19.5s. Common size, same looks.

Theres a reason owner/operators run tires darn near bald ;)

Jon I get out plenty pal!
Your one warehouse doesn't show what's going on in the rest of the united states, down here we have 8 major haulers carrying anything from sulfuric acid from Mississippi phosphates to fuel from the Chevron refinery, also theres the.state docks in mobile Alabama then you have new orleans and the docks there. In all of that traffic you'd figure if it was just that great or common of a thing I'd have seen more of it. I have seen some trailers with them, dump trailers from FL,carrier called perdido trucking. Guess the flotation thing works for them.

For reference truck lines are Estes,jb hunt, knight,Conway,Fulton, there's a bunch more I just can't think of them right now

Super singles and wide based tires are different animals. Wide based tires are much wider than the super. Either way, it will be expensive. Also, if not speced properly, the wide based tires can actually weight MORE than duals. With hauling livestock, I'll never run a single of any sort on the drives or trailer. With a super or wide based tire, it tends to be better to carry a mounted tire as a spare, vs just having a tire in a carrier. Better chance of a damaged wheel. Paying $1200 for a single roadside repair involving both the wide based tire AND a damaged aluminum rim is not what I call a good thing.

I'd just get 19.5s and be done with it. Having seen a Super single on the rear of a Ford dually, I was not impressed with the look of it at all.

In your pic, Moeller, we've always called the ones on the left super singles and the ones on the right floats. (minus the bottom left, I doubt that one would make it very far with 88k on it) We run "floats" on the front of our straight-frame quads, but we stick to normal duals on our semis. It's just not worth it to us to have to load up a service truck every time one of our drivers runs over a nail, which they seem to do a lot. They can be run home on a single dual easily, unless the inside one takes out an airbag or something.

You couldn't pay me to run any sort of semi tire on my truck, it already beats the hell out of me. Another thought is that Semi tires are really tall. They almost never match up well to the fender radius, especially our tiny front fenders.

Here's a pic of one with what I assume are 24.5's. Not much left of the front fender, and it doesn't match at all with the rear flares, which cant be cut on anyways.

It does still look good to me though.

I have been leaning a lot towards the 19.5s. I want the look of a semi tire but I don't need anything massive. I do have horses that I haul occasionally. One thing I've always liked about my duallys was the option to still run even if I did get a flat or something.

I just took my 19.5s off, its crazy how heavy they are, kind of felt like driving an old truck with a massive flywheel, felt sluggish, even compared to stock dually wheels
