Removing front Clip

Postby vwkaferman » Mon Feb 25, 2013 8:44 am

Howdy all. Get right to it: Had someone pull left in front of me the other day, I had right of way. Hit them, they took off. Front passenger is mangled. Truck is driveable, but radiator pushed into fan so doesn't hold water, etc...

Found an entire front clip for $450. Newb question, does this just unbolt apart in pieces i.e. do you think I can do this in my garage or is there a significant amount of welding involved?

Going to kill me if I can't get this truck back on the road.

Thanks!

It's pretty simple to do, take it apart piece by piece. You can do it in your garage with basic hand tools, although air tools or a cordless impact will make work way faster ;)

I consider the front clip to be the outter and inner fenders, core support, grille assembly, and maybe the hood. All of that is attached with nuts and bolts. With patience, it's not hard to get all the body lines to line up with shims, which will likely come with the front clip.

Like CumminsPower59 said, power tools and a 1/2" socket will be your friends.

It is possible to remove it all in one piece with out to much trouble but being that it is mangled maybe easier to do piece by piece. I wouldn't try to put it back together that way though. Would be to hard to make every thing line up.

Thought I'd throw a photo up of the damage. Paint might have been for sthi on her, but the body was straight as an arrow. Will get her back on the road, just need to source parts, and of course, time.

Ouch. If you had to you could save that core support.

Found and bought entire front clip out in California. The one on Ebay, I'm sure y'all saw. Will post pics as I progress, sure to have questions. Good time to upgrade intercooler I'd say.
