Door hinge pins

Postby slow_90firebird » Thu Mar 28, 2013 9:33 am

Quick question... I want to throw a new set of hinge pins / bushings in the door. Will the upper pin fit out and back in without un bolting the hinge from the door? Looks like it might not have enough room to come all the way up without hitting the inner door skin...

How did you guys ream out the hinges to fit the bushings? I am guessing you did both bottom and top hinges with bushings and pins?

I did mine a couple months ago and didn't have to ream anything. I just ordered a set of pins and bushings from Geno's. I think it cost me $4 to do both doors.

My lower drivers side hinge is completely hogged out. Like 1/8" all the way around the pin. I am guessing the bushings are not the cure I need but instead new hinges?

I welded around the inside of the bushing hole and opened it back up with a carbide bur bit,and used a round file to finish it out till the bushing fit tight. It's a pita, but unless you have great sources for new hinges that's about all you can do with it

haha seeing this thread reminded me i still havent done mine! probably wont at this point...

But if they get bad enough i imagine you could just drill out to like a 5/16 or 3/8 hole and drop a gr8 bolt top down with some bearing grease and a nylock nut?

WHEW!

I thought my hinge was hogged out but the bushing that was in there was paper thin. Took out the old bushings and pin, drove in new stuff. Rehung the door. Put on a new lock post pin. Man that thing shuts like a Benz now. Seriously took tons of slop out of it and closes like a firetruck door. Good stuff. Take 30 minutes and do it if you haven't already. I may even do the upper hinge tomorrow but I doubt it :)

Now if you keep it lubed it may last a few years! ;)

Suggestions on what to use for lube ?.
WD40 doesn't cut it !. Maybe something Teflon ?.
I have found you have to re-lube frequently. It's hard to find a lube that lasts for any length of time.

What do you use ?.

Thanks,

Bob the best is plain motor oil. Squirt bottle it in there to flush out any dirt and push in some fresh lube.

Spray grease, goes in liquid and then thickens up. WD is trash, I read a study once that said it lasted 15 minutes on a bicycle chain. Anything that is thick you shoot in is better than the thin stuff, WD, Blaster, or any of the rust busters aren't thick enough. Motor oil is ok, but still not thick enough IMO.
