Loudspeaker upgrade?

Postby Oskar » Sun Nov 03, 2013 2:50 am

Hi, i have terrible sound quality in my truck, probably the speakers are the paper cone types that got bad, so i want to replace all 4, i have a club cab, and the rear speakers look strange in size, are they standard 6x9? front looks like 4x6?
what is the impedance on those, im not planning to replace the stock chrysler casette radio, as i like it's classic 90's design.

The ones in the doors are 6x9's.

The rears are 4x10 and all the replacement speakes mount different from the Dodge speakers. The Dodge speakers use a two bolt setup. The replacements are 4 bolt. So you need to get creative on mountings. Kenwood makes a 2 way 4x10. No three ways in that size.

Thanks, 4x10 must be the strangest dimension ever made! i checked Ebay and there is a lot of different types though, and it even looks like most of them have multiple mounting brackets, bots 2 and 4 bolts.
i think i will buy these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LANZAR-VX410-CA ... 7e&vxp=mtr
and then find some high quality 6x9's locally.

but how will my stock radio handle the 4 ohm speakers? will i damage the amplifier? maby it's better to mount an external amplifier, or is there any better stereo? i know about the Pioneer DEH-P77DH, i had it in my Buick roadmaster, but i prefer a casette player, and need European frequencies, the pioneer unit lacked the feature to change frq. band.

Whatever speaker you use in the door, cheap to expensive, they all don't last very long unless you protect them somehow. Some of our trucks still have the rain/water shield in the door, but some of them have been removed because aftermarket speakers won't fit in them. There are some aftermarket buckets that can protect them, and there is a few different things that you can make on the cheap, I remember seeing one being made from a coolant container...its on here, but you'll have to dig for it ;)

Search "6x9 speaker baffle", it will show what you need.

I wrecked a nice, old pair of Audiobahns I've had for years, had them in 3 trucks and this Dodge ruins one first decent rain we had. Definitely make sure your weatherstripping is in good shape.

finally i made the upgrade, now i understand why the stock speakers had such a terrible sound!!

Image

but the rear speakers i bought had dual voice coils, 4 ohm each, so i did only connect one of them, because the front speakers was 4 ohm, so i think it's better to have an equal load of 4 ohm on every speaker, than to connect both coils in series, and get 8 ohm on the rear speakers only, or will that be better?

I was able to use a dremel and put 6x9's in the back of my old truck.
