A/C too warm, trying something

Postby slow_90firebird » Tue Jul 29, 2014 11:48 pm

Hey guys, thought id put up a pic of my latest idea... Cant say if it works yet.

Lately I have noticed that when the motor is cold, the A/C works awesome. The other day I started for the first time when it was already over 100 outside, and the a/c worked great. But I noticed that the hotter the engine gets, so does the air

Ever since I put the 4" downpipe on, I was not happy with its proximity to the plastic heater box, without a heat shield like the factory one. But it never melted, so I thought it was OK.

I decided to try this:

Cant tell a difference yet, but it has also been 20* below average lately.

My AC gets too cold at times but I have the stock rubber covering thingy on the motor. Maybe that helps.

Some big, stupid rubber cover that you'll hate if you try to put it on.

Is the vacuum shutoff valve inline of your heater hoses working correctly?

well the little arm on top of the valve moves from one side to the other when I disconnect and re-connect the vacuum line... is that what you mean?

Yup. Couldn't hurt to pull it and check that it's actually sealing when it closes, but do the easy stuff before you start draining coolant.

Oh trust me I wont be draining coolant. Its on its 3rd radiator (since I owned it) and this one seems to be holding for over a year now. Why mess with a good thing?

Its 77 out and raining. This is unheard of for late July in south Oklahoma. Its supposed to be dry and 115 haha

Last week it was 106 and very muggy one day. That was when I noticed the A/C worked better with the engine cold. But even if you park in the shade, the cab just gets so hot with the windows up. Maybe I am asking too much of an old truck.

I would clamp off the heater hose to make sure it's not leaking thru the valve.
I can share your pain, my service truck at work gets so hot in the cab I have to run the AC when it's 70 out if the sun is shining on it. There is no water shut off so the hot water is circulating all the time, so when I park the dash just dumps all the heat right into the cab. Stupid Cornbinder, too slow for the road and too fast for the field. :(

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

Well not a whole lot to say as of yet - still cooler than normal outside. It only got to 95 yesterday, and if there is any difference that I noticed, its that the A/C gets cool a little sooner after you start it up... Still need to try it out in the 105-110 weather though.

@ 85*, if I have the AC on medium high, I turn it down in 5 miles it blows that cold. Either I have a freak system or mine is well maintained.

my a/c has the same symptoms, and I've been thinking my fan clutch is weak. truck operates in upper end of engine temp gauge when overloaded and running hard, this also makes me think ''weak fan clutch".
