mirrors no longer adj? flop in the wind?

Postby DTanklage » Sat Feb 16, 2008 2:49 pm

both my trucks have the big mirrors on them

the ones that have the single bolt that goes straight up thru the 4 'legs' that all bolt to the door

and they are all pretty messed up (at the single bolt)

either tight or loose

bet some of you guys are having the same prob?

easy fix is to take the one big bolt out from the bottom (i had to burp mine out cuz they were rusted in there). the arm that the bolt goes into is stainless but the bolt isnt so it rusts and the threads get all screwed up. i drilled mine out to 7/16-14 and cut a pc of grade 12 all thread. red loctite the stud into the arm, got rid of the stupid friction washers and used ss washers instead (you also have to drill the holes in the arms to 7/16), and a ss nylock

done

pretty simple but if you need pix i can take some...

I just retapped the holes, put in stainless bolts with never seize. I also kept the plastic washers, I think you get a little more friction with them.
My .05 worth. ;)

well, if i was the only one driving my truck i wouldnt worry about any friction, i would just lock them down.

but the guy that shares the driving chores (to the track) is about half as tall as i am

lol

so, after rethinking it, mine will have to be adj (i dont want to have to use tools to move them every time we trade seats) (wont really be trading seats, more like when i am too tired to drive anymore i am gonna pull over and climb back in the trailer and crash and he is gonna keep going that way we never stop)

don

ps - mine didnt have plastic washers...it had fibers

if ya ask me they shoulda came with studs and stainless hardware in there from the factory

pete, i am sure your way works just as good

but i generally only use anti seize on stuff i am gonna be taking apart often

everything else gets nylocks

i hate lock washers with a passion

Don, nice sneakers! My mirrors came of a (shhhhh) ford
The bad thing is if I want to replace the head with the same thing, it's $100 or more. My FIL gave me one he had, NIB, said it was $100 2 years ago.
You probably coulda heated that and got the bolt out. I've done it and only made a small discolored mark.
I don't adjust mine too often, usually when I whack one in the parking garage.

my 1-ton came with the same chrome mirros as my wifes 250. all trucks got them in either power or not unless something else was spec'd out on the order sheet.

i personnally think west coast style mirrors are the best for towing but man are they ugly on an unloaded truck.
