Cowl crack what if...

Postby KRB64 » Sun Jul 06, 2008 4:39 am

What if you've got the cowl crack and DON'T fix it? :?

What's the worst that will happen? Other than the constant noise of the flexing metal rubbing?

Both sides have been cracked for a while now and I'm wondering how high on the list it needs to be?

The way mine was cracked, it just would have broken the flap that's folded over. That's on the "new" 86 cab. The original cab was cracked too. I made plates and welded them in across the top, then blasted it down the side a little. I know it's not like the factory patch, but I think it'll be ok. Or not, I don't really care right now, just coming off the green paint fume high! ;) :D

Does anybody have a picture of this crack? I don't see any on mine but not sure where to look.

No pics but if you open the door and look over the top hinge inside the fender you will see sheet metal with a "V" cut to form over the top of the cowl corner. My cracks start at the base of the "V" and run towards the front tires. That make sense? :?

Richie, if you give me a day or so, I'll get a pic of my old cab. The new one is already patched.
You can't always see the crack either, without pulling the valance.

If you get an unidentifiable creaking squeaking noise going over bumps and the like, you probably have the cracks. Mom's truck has them. Guess that's a x-mas holiday project.

Ok, I just ran out and got pics. The 1st one is the crack on the passenger side. This is just below the windshield.
The 2nd is my repair patch, notice the weld down in the crease about 3 inches, to hold the sides together.

Is that the '86 then? My cab is a little different. The crack is further out and down toward the fender.

My memory must be dyslexic too. I went out and looked and the crack does run towards the windshield - not the tires  .

Your crack looks like it would leak where as mine doesn't.

The crack is on the 92, the patch is on the 86. If it does leak, it only runs into the airbox under the wipers, not into the cab. ;)

Cool. I'll move it further down my "to-do" list. 8) Ot at least until the creaking drives me crazy... :?
