CB mounting?

Postby bgbubabrwn » Tue Jul 29, 2008 8:39 pm

I bought a newer CB today and am trying to figure a better location for mounting it. I need my floor space and it needs to be able to be heard too. About the only place i can think of is to hang it from the ceiling, my concern is accidently punching through both layers of sheet metal with some screws. Any idea of how much space there is between the ceiling and roof? Or any other good ideas for mounting locations?

Mine is mounted under the dash between the ash tray and the bottom of the steering column. I also have a trailer brake controller in my truck and the cb was mounted first, so the brake controller is under the steering column where you can't see it. It's not the best but I use the cb more. I've seen them mounted on top of the dash too, but I'm not a big fan of that. I think the roof mount would be the way to go if you could pull it off, maybe try looking at a truck stop for a mount, or from a big rig parts place. A lot of semi's have the cb mounted to the roof, I like the look of it a lot better that way.

Right now my brake controller is mounted where your cb is and i've a cobra 19 mounted to the bottom of the ashtray, but i bought a fullsize one now and thats just not going to cut it. I was thinking some good tek screws to the roof might work??

i screwed a cb to the roof in my 91, and my dad had one on the roof of his 82 D350 a looong time ago (where i got the idea, otherwise id'a been scared like you!)

iirc i used 1/4" or 3/8" self tappers.. i had it mounted between the driver side visor and ceiling, and i didnt have any probs going through. just go slow with the drill and stop when it goes though. if you have a headliner, slit the material before you drill so the bit doesnt grab it and twist the material all up into a ball...unless you need a headliner anyways!

Plenty of room in there. Unless you want to use 3" long screws for it... (I have a less than bright little brother)

Pull the sunvisor and have a peek inside the roof. The arm of the sunvisor gos through the inside skin and you can see lots of space in there.

I don't know how much room between but mine has 3 dimples on the outside of the roof. I think it was the drill going through and denting it. It was the original owner.

If its the smaller chassis Cobra unit, it will fit where your ashtray is. If you don't need the ashtray, just pull it out and mount the CB in the slot. Looks pretty good. You can buy a lighter socket/power outlet at a hardware store and put it under the dash to replace the one in the ashtray.

If its a large chassis CB, I vote roof mount.

Its the cobra 29, so larger chassis. Just finished mounting it to the roof, got all the wires ran behind the trim, turned out great!! Also got the 19 that was in the truck swapped into the jeep too.

I'm gettin close to spendin the money on a galaxy with a side band, and mounting was going to be an issue. Not now, on the roof it goes!

I was going to suggest if you drill, wrap some tape around the bit. This will act as a stop so it doesn't go in too deep.

Me too! :o When you pull the tape off does it hurt? And leave a nasty red rash? I gotta find better tape. ;)

If you have a headliner, you don't want to mount directly to it. There's a void between the headliner and the first layer of metal. I've taken a 12" 2x4 a few times and put above the headliner. I used 4 2" screws to hold the 2x4 and some #8 wood screws for the bracket. Of coarse I run bigger radios than a cobra and need them mounted farther back. For a cobra you might use 1" board being closer to the windshield.
