If you have to pick it up and slam it its most likely hinge pins. its a common problem with a older vehicle.

You need to replace the hinge pins. NAPA has them on stock. After the pins are replaced then readjust the door if needed.

A friends doors got so bad that the driver-door was impossible to shut if it got opened and the passenger-side dropped a couple inches when opened.

A local body man installed new hinge-pins and adjusted the doors with a block of wood on a floor-jack; then, he installed new seals all around.

His doors now shut as easily as an early-eighties Ford; just push them until they "click", and no more rain funneling in.

I recently did the hinge-pins on two Dodges and my Ford; the difference is amazing.

I put new pins on my doors before i took the truck apart. Before you spend the whoping 10 bucks on them make sure that the hinges themselves haven't been warn into by the pin. Mine were so the pins and new bushings only let the door fall about 1/2inch so it didn't really solve the problem

An Ounce of Prevention

Postby Ace » Sat Aug 02, 2008 5:45 am

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Put a drop of oil on the pins once or twice a year and they'll last forever.

Before you get real excited and buy pins and bushings, have a buddy lift the door and make sure the door isn't cracked where the lower hinge is bolted. ;)

I found that opening the door and backing up past a tree works great. It turns them into jeep doors that open all the way to the fender.
