Cab swap?????

Postby pulltilbroke » Sun Jan 11, 2009 12:08 pm

OK I'm gonna be doin a cab swap in the spring and was wondering what differences there are in cabs, my truck is a 90 and I'm gonna be putting an 86 big hump auto cab on.

Are the holes already there for the clutch MC ?

Is there any difference between a Diesel and a gasser cab?

What else should I be aware of before atempting this swap?

I am going to be using my whole wiring harness

This will be my first cab swap with this many wires. "I'm used to workin on mid 60's Chebys"

I just found out that an 86 cab mounted on a 91 frame with a 92 518 automatic trans, has trans tunnel interference. A few wacks with a hammer on the drivers side gives sufficient clearance. I just wish I knew this before painting/rustproofing the cab.

A spray can of undercoating will help you out real good! ;)

ahale, you might better cut out the hump and swap it on your truck. There's a big difference with a 4x4 or standard truck. A little whack with a hammer won't work on yours.

Should be a straightforward swap for the cabs if both trucks are a standard cab 2wd auto though, right?

Pullit, here's the differences just in YOUR 2 cabs.

The '86 cab has:
No holes under the dash to mount the clutch master bracket.
No hole in the firewall to pass the clutch master cylinder through.

The bulkhead wiring is relocated @ 1-1/2 inches to the driver's side and @ 3/4" DOWN on all mid-'87 and up trucks to facilitate locating the hydraulic master cylinder.

Additionally, you'll need to use your pedals, BOTH of them.

Is your '86 cab the "wide floored" one for 5 speed and/or 4wd?

Mark.

Well just got home from Mr. Nixons place. Just picked up a nice 92 cab that needs a few minor dings repaired and when I say minor a lot of em you wouldn't see but its Going black so.... . Cab is rust free and will make my cab swap much easier.
