Cab swap?????

Postby pulltilbroke » Sun Jan 11, 2009 12:09 pm

OK I'm gonna be doin a cab swap in the spring and was wondering what differences there are in cabs, my truck is a 90 and I'm gonna be putting an 86 big hump auto cab on.

Are the holes already there for the clutch MC ?

Is there any difference between a Diesel and a gasser cab?

What else should I be aware of before atempting this swap?

I am going to be using my whole wiring harness

This will be my first cab swap with this many wires. "I'm used to workin on mid 60's Chebys"

On both of my 89's as well as a donor 90 cab I chopped up they had the clutch m/c hole. They just had a rubber plug in it. Have a good time. Pete knows how much fun it is.

Well, you have a big hump, so that will save you about 3-4 hours. ;)
I put an 86 cab on my 92, and it wasn't fun. I had an auto cab, so I had to swap the hump, and I cut out the firewall on the auto and grafted the clutch area to it. The wire harness plug was about 1/2-1" into where the clutch master came thru. I'm not sure what you have for clutch stuff, hyd or manual. If you need pics of what I cut and welded back in, let me know.
Some day I might get around to finishing my "cab swap" thread on here. ;)
It didn't really take me all winter, it sat under a tarp until about march, then I got motivated. I did a ton of other stuff too, painted the frame, new springs & shocks, etc. I had it sorta done for dyno day in July, then had to take the fenders back off and paint them.

pulltilbroke.... bring your good welding eyes on over and we can do my crew cabs firewall any time you like. ;-P

I would imagine a little plasma work and some time with the welder and it should be done.

Sounds good

I gotta slap a new headgasket in my truck before I drive that far.

When you get your new head gasket in you also need to install a fist on your dash board that is hooked to a boost switch. Anything over 40 psi and you get punched in the nose. That should keep you in line. 8) Its hard to stay out of the power isn't it?

Original firewall,

The 2 pieces I cut out,

The new older cab, ready to install. Notice the steering support bracket 1/2 in the hole? I did this for more strength, welded both sides.

On the original I cut oversize 1st, then trimmed down to size. I cut it out with a 4" grinder w/ a cutting wheel, and drilled out the spot welds. Welding near the top was fun, with the seam sealer stuff in there. When I was done, I bedlinered the firewall and the whole inside of the cab. You can't even see the welds. ;)
