A/C woes

Postby RumbleFish » Thu May 28, 2009 9:48 am

its friggin hot out. i tried to shoot some freon in the goober for a cool ride to the campground over the weekend, but it didnt exactly go as planned. it was converted to 134 at some point, as it already had the fittings installed. i filled it with some freon/stop leak/oil/conditioner whatever you wanna call it, and the compressor ran for a couple minutes and then shut off. then it would try to kick on repeatedly, but would only stay on for a split second, and it kept doing this. this whole time, the gauge i was using never got into the filled zone, and after a while it was back on zero. i put in more than the 40something oz the sticker on the fan shroud was calling for. ac stuff is definitely not my strong point, and i prolly wasted $30 worth of freon and sthi to do this. im a bit disappointed to say the least. what is up with this thing? im guessing it was leaking as fast as i could fill it, but the PO said the worked somewhat recently.

We knew that! Now tell us what the problem was! I was going to say you didn't have enough in and the pressure was still low.
FYI, no matter what the can says, turn it upside down to fill the system. Works faster, and all the stuff goes in. ;)

Exactly Pete, I turn my cans upside down also. You have to be careful though, I overdid it once and my compressor stoped turning and the 134 was hissing out of somewhere.

It was hissing out? Well gee, think that was why you had to put some in to begin with?

Rich, you gotta go to SOP. I think you and Jeff may be long lost brothers!

ya, it helps if you get enough in there to run the compressor. the sticker on the shroud said 41 oz or so iirc. i put in a few more than that and this happened. i didnt wanna overdo it so i quit. i found a dummy's guide to ac and it said if it turns on but kicks off within 60 seconds, youre still too low. another 1/2 can did it for me.

figures, i fix the ac on a day with a 68 deg high temp, instead of the 89 of yesterday

scratch that....after running it a few minutes today, i heard a whining noise coming from under the hood, followed by a psssshhhhh. i immediately turned off the ac and it stopped. i turned it back on and heard the compressor turning on and off quick and repeatedly. looks like ive got a helluva leak some where....

Turn it on and look under the hood to see where it's coming from. Do I have to send Philip up there to hold your hand again?

How does a leak cause the compressor to cycle?

When the 134 gets low the low pressure switch kicks off as soon as ths compressor clicks in.

Sounds to me like it was leaving the back of the compresser via that relife valve. If the pressures get to high then that is the fail safe for the system so a line will not blow. And to much refegerant will make pressures to high. Also is you fan clutch working?
The correct charge for the 134a "up"grade is 32oz or 2lbs.
Good luck

Yup, and I thought you might be smart enough to figure that out for yourself! ;)
