foot heater?

Postby Redneckintraining » Sun Dec 05, 2010 1:19 am

I have an 89 Dodge W250 CTD and its heater is marginal at best.It will keep you from freezing in really cold weather but by no means will it cook you like the heater in my Volvo. It might be better if there was some provision to direct the feeble attempt at warm air to your feet to prevent them from freezing but there doesn't appear to be.I was wondering if anyone installed a 12V heater to blow hot air at your feet and help keep them warm?Between the poor thermal insulatation of the cab and the poor heater you really know when its cold outside.Generally its gold enough at night that the truck will drive down the highway with the gauge like 1/8 colder than what it normally runs at.

When the heater is in the heat position it should blow heat to the floor. Have you put the blower motor on a relay? Should get you much better air volume to the floor.

I tried that mod last night on the 90, just ran power from the battery to the blower motor. I'd guess it turns at least 20% faster with full power. Gonna wire another switch in it.

If your thermostat and heater core are operating correctly, and you dont have any gaping holes in the floorboard, it should keep you adequately warm, unless you only drive it 10min at a time.

Have you checked to make sure your ball valve is opening like it should?
Have you verified coolant temp with a real gauge, not the 1-step-better-than-an-idiot-light that comes from the factory?
Are you getting vacuum to the heater/ defrost duct dors to move them where they should?
Is a dead mummified mouse blocking one or more of the heater doors from moving?

This is just to get you started. I hate troubelshooting stuff, but I (sadly) do a better and more thorough job than most shops.

There are no vacuum lines anywhere on the truck. the heater is controlled by cables and linkages.
