painting truck

Postby sid » Mon Jul 16, 2007 7:23 pm

I just got my 91 ram. it has surface rust on the roof. Not near the windows.
how do I go about taking care of it. since there are a few dent issues on other parts of the truck I figure I would address the most pressing issue. should I use spray cans and etching primer? would that be compatible if I end up paint the whole truck at once sometime into the future?
there is a dent on the right rear quarter panel. A body man said I could buy section and weld it?? the other place for that is on the cab next to the handle. along the door jamb.. i am not making this a show truck but i want it to be resoectable since it is a very low mileage truck!!

Sid:

I've just been getting into some body work over the last year myself.

It is one of those things that you have to learn by doing.

As far as painting goes I'm using the "Roll your car" method where you use a roller to paint your vehicle with rust paint. Sounds wacky but it works incredibly well.

Here's a few links in case you haven't seen this before:

If you have surface rust and it's above the windshield, you probably don't have a roof left. These trucks hold moisture in a panel up there, and it rusts from the inside out. I hope this isn't your problem, it sucks to find out your new creampuff is a rust bucket.

Though bad, it's not the death of the truck.

There are many "custom" approaches to conquering the cab-rust demon.

Fiberglass is an easy solution.

If the rust is bad, and you want a truly custom look, then graft on the top from a hi-rise fiber-glass topper, complete with the aerodynamic angled glass panels.

Modified as such, you can then put risers under the seats to get them up there where you can REALLY SEE, sort of big truck style.
