Well since the new photo bucket app sucks I haven't been able to load any pictures. I got a stepside bed yesterday for the truck.

That's awesome.
I had the same idea, found a long bed step side and thought about using it on the dually, and widen the fenders a bit, but wasn't sure how it'd look with that large of a fender

Nice stepside. Way better condition than mine!!

Looks like you'll beat me to it :)

Take some install pics.... Mines so rotted out I can't hardly tell where it's supposed to bolt to the crossmembers...

He painted the panels to keep them from rusting. It will get blasted and painted before it goes on the truck.

Hello Andy. Thanks for the help registering.

So, from what I can tell from this thread you started out putting the 5.9/518 in the 1/2 ton truck, then basically put the D250 front suspension on the 1/2 ton including the 8-lug hubs. You put the D70 axle in initially but eventually went to a 9" Ford and back to 5-lug front and rear. Now it looks like you're going to a shortened 2nd Gen 4x4 frame with the 1st Gen cab and step-side bed with the 47RH? Is that correct?

I was given a '92 D250 ECLB.

Image

I initially thought I'd drive it as is after rebuilding the front end and some minor body work but I've discovered both the front roof corners are rotted out and don't want to mess with the body work so I thought I'd find me a 1/2 ton RCSB and do what you've done for a fun little DD and part time race toy. This engine has been dynoed at 308/630 and the 518 has been modded and I really like the way it drives and the D70 is in great shape and has been converted to the factory LS and disc brakes.

I have a some questions.

*-Why have you decided to go to the 2nd Gen frame? Why the 4x4? Did you give up on the 1st Gen/half ton front suspension?

*-If staying with the 1/2 ton frame, would you suggest putting the D250 front end on with the 8-lug and using my D70?

*-Did you find some 15" 8-lug wheels that worked? I've been thinking of going with a Nascar wheel. Surely I can find some in 8-lug or with a blank center I can have drilled.

*-Will the captains chair seats and console from '92 work in a regular cab?

After all your trials and troubles, if you had the '92 I have, would you recommend the 1/2 ton conversion or fixing the roof on what I have and maybe shortening the '92 frame and going with a short bed? The ECLB is SO long and that roof rot REALLY has me discouraged on this EC. I just really like the idea of a RCSB with this drivetrain and I didn't think it would be as hard a conversion as dealing with the roof and frame shortening of the '92 ECLB.

I've changed directions so many times over the year it's confusing lol. For the front I used the D250 drag link, tie rods and such. The mount for the tie rod that bolts onto the spindle was modified and mounted to the stock D150 spindle. I did this because I had all newer parts on the D250 and I'm cheap. I also used the lower D250 control arm. Now if I do it over I'll use Van lower control arms and keep the halfton stuff up front. A number of guys have done this and its worked fine. My truck is staying 2wd and getting a stepside bed. I've tossed around the idea of pulling the Cummins and dropping in my 440 but I can't bring myself to do it. My truck is extremely nose heavy. If you go this route move as much weight to the rear as you can. With 600-700 pounds against my tailgate it drives great. I'm also toying with the idea of cutting out the firewall and moving the engine back. The simplest way to do it would be to swap over all the D250 suspension it will all bolt right in. You can even use the rear section of the ext. Cab long bed drive shaft as the shaft for the short bed 518/d70 it's a perfect fit. I have a set of 15x8 white spokes I bought to use but never did. They are 8 lug and sitting in my shed.

What's the advantage of the van arms vs. the D250 arms? I already have the D250 arms from the '92.

Thanks for the tip on the drive shaft and I may hit you up on the wheels when I get to that point. Right now I don't have funds to buy a 1/2 ton. Just in the planning stages for now.

Do you think I'll be able to use the captains chair seats and console from '92 work in a regular cab?

This 1st Gen roof rot has me concerned. There was a fellow on CompD, Bodacious, that said Dodge changed something around '91 and that's when the roof rot started. Any truth to that? If so, if I can find an '80's model 1/2 ton would it be less likely to have the roof rot? I think I can handle rust anywhere else. It just seems to me it's going to be really tough to replace just the roof skin and it look right.

Thanks,
Scott
