P-Pumping an 02 24v

Postby ahale2772 » Tue Nov 01, 2011 4:48 am

Thinking about P-pumping dads 02 24v HO 6 speed 2500

freking FASS electric pump has died because the VP44 wont send it a signal to turn on... I think is is on VP44 number 4 now...

few questions, I know the whole front timing cover needs to be swapped, does that mean the CPS will be eliminated?

that being said, how does one retain the Tach signal? (IDK if the signal comes internaly from the VP44 or what)

Is there anyways to tell if the truck has the 53 block? or were all the HO trucks the better block?

Is there any way to make the truck think its OK? or will it always trip a check engine light?

thanks...

I know that the "53" is physically cast into the side of the block

Down near the power steering pump is the casting number.
Alex, go over to NETDP and ask, I know Warpig did his truck, and I think there are a couple others who have done it too.

yeah thanks Pete. ive looked a bit, but havnt found a thread about guys just wanting the swap for towing, reliability. all the guys on CF and CompD just seem to pull the check engine bulb, but no mention of tach readings or stuff like intake grid function

big issue is the electronics (clearly) i wish there was a way to tell the computer to calm down, things are ok

we will probably end up doin it this winter, either way

I've got a P pump 24 valve but I can't be of too much help, it came to me this way already and it's a 96 truck and uses the 12 Valve harness and an assortment of 12 Valve sending units and such here and there on it, they combined the two engines and no check lights because the truck thinks it still has the original engine since the harness, truck and injection pump all match. From what little I know about the swap on a factory VP truck, you'll still have the check engine light if I'm correct. The easy fix- remove the check engine light bulb from the gauge cluster. With a P pump there's little reason to keep the bulb since most everything is mechanical on the engine then, there will be no way the engine can tell the truck it has a real problem anyhow. Cruise over to CompetitionDiesel.com or CumminsForum.com for more help, both have plenty of info on this swap and can tell you about everything you need to know about it and how to do it. CF has a specific p pump 24 valve swap forum even....
