Putting a cummins in a dozer?

Postby redneckroot » Thu Feb 09, 2012 2:53 pm

I was out back looking at an old cletrac DD dozer that I have and started thinking whether or not I could stick a 5.9 in there. The diesel that was in it came on a pallet in parts and pieces, and rebuilding what I actually have of it would cost more then its worth. I'd be better off just buying a 50 years newer machine. I understand that to put the cummins in it I would have to machine a backing plate and figure out the clutch issues along with a way to drive the front mounted hydraulic pump. There is beyond enough room for the motor. My main concern is rpms and over powering it. The original motor was rated at 45-68hp depending upon where you read it from. RPM's on the original was rated at 1300. Whats your guys thoughts? Worth playing with? Anyone ever done it?

Thanks,
- Tom

A 4b or BT may be a better choice. As for the front mount pump, you buy one that mounts right in where our vacuum/ power steering goes. ;) As for RPMs, just set the high idle down. I don't think you want it at 1300, but I wouldn't go over 15-1600.
I'm not sure exactly what a DD is, but I know a guy repowered a OC3 with a chevette motor. It wasn't worth a siht lugging, but it plowed like a SOB when you got it wound up!

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

It's a 13000 pound machine with winch and blade .is probably more like 16000 plus. I know people have put them in Oliver farm tractors. Which can't be that much different since Oliver bought out cletrac. This crawler actually has Oliver on some of the parts.

Yeah, 6b is the way to go in that. The rest of what I said is still accurate.

Shoot yeah! The block plate may be the hard part. Depending on the set up maybe you can make a short driveshaft from the flywheel to the trans. If you have the time and fab skills, it won't be bad. I've seen your skills, so 8)
