A518 to a getrag in a 1984 gmc

Postby crewcab59 » Wed Feb 15, 2012 9:52 am

I'm finally getting started on my swap, I done some reading on the master cylinder and slave cylinder combination, I though i was going with the jeep slave cyl. and using the Chevy hyd. master cylinder. but now when I called south bend they said that the jeep slave was for the nv4500 and was not sure of the getrag, but reading some of the sigs it appears some people are doing this. I bought the south bend clutch and flywheel kit, and I'm using the Chevy hydraulic master, I just need a slave cylinder and I'm not sure which way to go. If there is some one who knows about this or has some advice please speak up.. thanks

I've tried to use the Chevy master and the factory slave on the Getrag, and the Chevy master was too small. I don't remember the chevy master's bore, but I'm using a Ford master from a 90's (I think I spec'd a '94) F350. It has a 7/8's bore and works perfect. I opened up the hole in the Chevy master mounting plate, thinned it out a little with the grinder and the Ford spec'd part fit right in and is held with a snap ring.

According to Philip, the slave for the "upgraded" hydraulic packages are the same number as on the Getrags. The difference is in the pin length. PM Philip and ask him.

OK, see what he has, I was doing some measuring, and the stroke on my friends getrag has about a 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches of stroke and my Chevy stuff also has about the same so I'm thinking I can make a bracket to mount the stock Chevy slave cylinder to the getrag bell housing and just make a push rod just the right length to accommodate the bracket and still have that 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 throw. I can always invent, but some things are better to duplicate. thanks

well,,, i drove it today, I used the Chevy slave so it is all Chevy clutch system. And I made a bracket to bolt to the getrag bell housing, and so far it shifts great. the adjustments were fussy but it worked good, and man does it smoke like a freight train  . I read that the 5x14's were smokey, but with the auto it was nothing like this, and now it really takes off. :D sweet ImageImageImage
