Cummins/82 C10

Postby ellis93 » Mon Mar 11, 2013 8:02 pm

Anyone know of a really good conversion tread on any forum(s) that gives a detailed account of an Cummins swap into a square body Chevy. I've been over on 4bt swap and I've found some swaps but I've not searched it out very hard, kinda wondering if any of you all might have a lead on one....thanks

I'll snoop around Andy,thanks.

On doing this swap......would anyone consider going none innercooled for this. It's 2500lbs of truck and will never see more than itself and occupants for weight, reckon I need it

I might not even fool with a/c with this thing either

I probably will but I think it'll be a beooch to make the condenser/ic/trans cooler stack up to fit with a factory grill,it may make me run one of those weirdo phantom grills :puker: like all the lowride/hot rods do. It's still all talk right now,the dang truck has been disassembled for 6yrs behind the shop,I'm less motivated than the tacoclaw

I tried to do it in a 87 Burb. Some notes I remember...

All these notes are also using the 1st Gen rubber mounts and the factory Chevy engine stamped pieces where the 350 engine mounts bolted to. I moved these back a few inches and slotted the holes. This allowed for minimal fab and I had about .5" between the back of the engine trans combo (727) and the pinch weld/firewall. I had .5" clearance with the Chevy front crossmember and the oil pan in all spots.

The 727 mount was right where the 700R4 crossmember was at.

The IC thing isn't going to fit if you try to use the stock 1st Gen radiator and electric. I cut into the core support about 1.5" and that left about that amount in front of the engine to radiator.

To keep the A/C, an industrial rear mount should be used or a 3rd Gen exhaust manifold ported to the "D" shaped ports of the 12v.

A custom DP is needed for the exhaust manifold.

With the turbo in this spot, the charge pipe from the IC to intake horn is about dam perfect if you can make a spacer to raise the horn and turn it 180* and clock the turbo. This does create a hood clearance issue BUT a cowl hood should take care of that.

A Freightliner A/C and Alt mount would be nice so no trimming of the crossmember and frame rail isnt needed.

The Dodge frame rails at the mounts is around 33", Chevy was 32" or 31.5".

Hope that helps.

Hey Mr. Ellis - Scott [aka Crewcab59] who is a vendor over on 4btswaps was selling sets of 6BT engine mount adapters that adapted a 1st gen mounting to use the GM factory motor mounts in the stock position. In other words, no redrilling of the frame required. I'm not sure if they were for both 4WD & 2WD but they mounted the engine low enough that there was no body lift required. Scott has not been all of that active lately & I believe it may take a bit of time to get a reply back from him. His mounts were cheap compared to places like auto world and the other big buck suppliers.
