'93 Ext Cab Rebuild

Postby matthewh » Sat Mar 11, 2017 6:45 pm

Some of you may remember back at the end of Oct I wrecked my 93 W350. Went off the road and hit a road sign and alot of brush, and crushed the pass side corner of the roof, causing the insurance to.total it. Bought it back and been slowly working on it, but it's been slow due to work and it being winter.

Scored an entire rust free outer roof skin from the local pick and pull, came off a '73. Above the windshield is rusty, but the outer skin is I'm great shape.

Now my dilemma, trying to decide if I should just cut out the bad section and weld in the corner, or cut across the roof and replace the front 24". I haven't found anybody who documented a corner replacement, just a whole front piece.

Here's a couple pics

Decided to just cut across the roof and replace the whole front section, thought it would be easier and less chance of warping than just fixing the damaged section. Got a chance to separate the donor panel, was alittle rusty at the front edge, but I think it's still savable, ill know more tomorrow when I blast it on my lunch break. It's way longer than I need, but figured I can trim and fit to the cab, and have extra to cut off.

top part doesn't look to bad but the lower looks alittle crusty. I need to do this on my Crew. Just gotta finish up my dads trans for his truck so I can put the crew in storage.

The front flange that gets spot welded to the rain gutter is only part on the outer skin that's crispy. Everything else has surface rust and should easily clean up. Hoping to blast this weekend, last got too cold to work on it
