5.9 in a boat

Postby GO OVRIT » Fri Jul 18, 2008 6:14 pm

So how well will a ve do in a 25' boat? Is there enough of a power band to make it work or should I find a p pumped motor?

Are you talking about overheating the pump or the engine. I can keep the engine cool.

If 350hp is enough for your boat you shouldn't have any problems with it. I think it would work great.

one bad thing about a ve in a boat is fuel consistency. diesel from boat docks can be really funky. a p-pump will not be damaged by questionable fuel were a ve will. other than that a ve will be fine

JLeonard is going to swap a 5.9 into his boat in the near future. He's been collecting parts for a while, I think he's almost ready.

I've still got a lot of parts to collect. If any of you come across any marine cores or any parts pm me.

There are a ton of 210 horse, ve b series cummins in lobster boats. They make a great engine and you can run higher horsepower levels in boats due to unlimited cooling ( the ocean ). My uncle has a 3.9 4b turbo in his boat and he has 150 hp. You can still buy the QSB5.9 cummins marine and they run up to 435 horsepower now. Sorry guys I go a 6D16 mitsubishi in mine...If it aint broke don't fix it.

every second boat has a 210 (5.9) cummins around here, no problems with overheating, running either a heat exchanger or water to water cooling tubes, every boat that doesnt have a 210 has a 135 ford naturally aspirated, as is the case with mine  . one guy has a 21 foot fiberglass mussle boat, straight dry ehaust out the back of the boat with his outlet about 5 inches from the turbo, you can hear the whisle from miles away, and an I/O set up. he can pull about 25 or 30 knots  . most other boats are over the 40 foot mark and wooden. with a velvet drive trans and about a 5" or bigger wet ehaust, wide open is about 16 knots.
John Deere and Cummins, the perfect fleet.
93 ext cab, 5" horizontally mounted straight piped mitre stack, tweaked pump, and a stero for Christmas!

I could have bought a 210 for 6,000 complete with gear. No money, no funny. I would like to power my 32 foot Sea Pride novi with one. Did you say most guys run them with a velvet drive? Thats all I have ever had. Most guys down here have switched to twin disk's. They had trouble with them as the engines got over 200 horses. The QSB's now list a 480 horse option.

I had to go work on a machine on an island owned by Tenneco out on Lake Ontario. I rode out on the work boat, about 25-28 feet long. Powered by twin Cummins'. It was on it's 3rd set of engines. Neither of the 1st 2 sets were Cummins though. ;) Talk about loud? They just screamed! :D We had to wear hearing protectors. I think he said it'll do about 20 knots. I can't remember exactly, it was a couple years ago. Just way cool! 8)

There was a wooden boat here in town that had a straight piped 6 b 210. Sounded nice. :D Thats the one I could have bought. O well. There has been a few nice sounding boats around over the years. One kid went through the 385 fast burn GM performance small blocks like cheese. You could hear him before you saw him. Couldn't understand why he could not turn 6 grand all day long. :D A kid I went to school with had a boat with a custom 520 ( or there abouts ) ford big block. ( He fell overboard a few years back and drowned ). Dam ocean takes lots of guys.

I'm from Nebraska, so pardon my stupidity when I ask:
How many miles per hour per "knot"?
Never cared for, or been around many boats, not the watercraft type, anyway.

Mark.
