Raymo's '93 chevy

Postby Raymo » Sat Oct 03, 2009 10:48 am

Well I had the engine in and driving once, but in true young hotrodder fashion it wasn't good enough so I pulled it all apart and started over with a new frame. So this is where I'm at so far, more to come in a week or so.

The truck I'm usin', '93 chevy that started life as a 2wd single wheel with the sick.5 diesel and a 5-speed.

Here's what I did for mounts, the bottom tube is 1.5"x3" 7 guage, and the gusset pieces are also 7 guage cut from a chunk of 3"x6" tube. Oh and don't mind the flux residue, the welds are pretty I promise ;)

This is the engine, trans and case full weight on the frame, dead nuts at 5 degrees

That's all for now, garage is tied up again and the cab is at the shop gettin' new rockers and corners.

Lol it's from a '99 Chevy 3500HD, the sweet part besides low miles is that the calipers look and mount exactly like my 60 calipers on my first gen front axle and my '78 60 I have on this truck.

FWIW, they used 10 lug disc brake 80's in the late 80's in F-superdutys also

Well progress is a little slower than I'd like, but so far I've come up with this for my axles. I just picked up a set of 19.5" wheels with some brand new 8-19.5R tires, they measure 34" so those will help with my 4.10 gears. I really wanted to keep my dually bed and still run the narrowish CC axle, so the plan is to machine up some front and rear 10 on 8.75" hubs to bring the WMS from 66.5" back out to the 72" the 14 bolt has. For the front I'm torn between making adapters for 8 to 10 lug, or machining hubs for my 60.

So far in the build I've invested...
Engine, clutch and flywheel- traded my $1500 welder
NV 4500- traded my small Block Chevy
Dana 300 case, input shaft, and 32 spline output and 1410 yoke- $500
Dana 80- $200
dana 60- $300

Not too bad I guess

Well, come to find out tonight that my 80 has a 4.63 gear :dayum: . Still worth the 200 so far tho. Rear hubs should be done in a week or so, and my cab is still at the body shop for week three now. Lol so much for a quick build!

4.63?!
Well, I feel a bit better, the hauler has 4.56s.
Wonder how that'll work with the NV4500's overdrive?

Mark.

Yup, I guess it's some kind of "wrecker prep" option those 3500HD's had. Now I gotta convince the wife that 400 bucks for the 3.73 that fits the 4.10 and up carrier is a good deal lmao. Thank goodness I already had the gear for my 60 front  Unless I come up with at least a 4.10 for the 80, then I can leave the front diff alone.

Well, past few weeks have been interesting to say the least. I have some 4.10's for my 80 on the way, and my hubs seem to be a never ending battle so far. But thats what I get for not leaving well enough alone
