Mustang Cummins

Postby IowaCummins » Sun Jan 10, 2010 2:09 am

Alright so around here there is a bunch of 5.0s and alot of v6 mustangs running around thinking they are the fastest thing out there. well i want to prove em wrong and still have all diesels in the garage. so local craigslist found me a 79 mustang for just under $500. no rust and a few small dents, but other wise pretty straight. i have yet to purchase it. before i do i need to get some measurements under the hood. i got a buddy that has a few fox bodies, so im going to do some measureing. i am very familiar with the 1st gen cummins and the VE pump but i think i might try and find a early P pump with the 47RH so i will have easy power and a lock up convertor. the rear end im thinking will be a 9" i might try leaf springs with cal trac's or i migh just go straight to a 4 link coil over suspension. i have no clue on the front end yet. i might just have to figure out who makes some heavy springs and upgraded ball joints? maybe just air bag it and call it good. might get a small intercooler for upfront and a radiator is goign to have to be custom, along with electric fans. let me knwo what you guys think. suggestions and ideas are very welcome!

Someone on CompD put one into a Stingray with a cowl hood. Might want to go look at that.

FWIW there is a 67 Camaro drag car with a common rail profiled in the February 2010 issue of Diesel World on pages 58-62.

I have no idea what the measurments for the 'Stang are under the hood, but I'd assume it'd be easier to get a 4bt under there. If you can find a 4bt with a P7100 on it, you can still make a lot of horsepower, and it would be lighter. Something else to think about...

There is a guy on 4bt swaps that put a 6bt into a square body S-10, so i'm sure it can be done. Of course this guy could rest his arm on the back two valve covers :)

Once it fits in there you're going to go through hell trying to hook it so you have a chance with the local 2900lb v8 cars that can practically hook in dirt. . . small chance I've been around some street racing
93 Reg cab LE 4x4 518AT, 145k and counting, pump turned up,Internal pump mods, Denny T stage 2, non IC DV's, timing bumped up, BD 40hp injectors,BHAF and me-built mandrel bent CAI,4" turbo back, Holley lift pump, new white with gold paint job, recieving more mods to tow the Duster and push this stupid WI snow.

Pointless venture for street use, much less on a good track with slicks.
I used to run a very warmed up 426 Wedge in a 1970 Duster on the street.
It was nearly impossible to hook up on the street.
I can't imagine what an engine that's double that weight, in a body 2/3rds the weight of the Duster would be like to try to drive.

Don't forget, it's easy to go, but much harder to "whoah".

You'd stand a better chance of running a 4bt, at least then you'd be able to overcome the weight.

Mark.

Mid mounting it should take care of the weight transfer issues. I don't think I want to be sitting next to that SOB going down the track at WOT though!
