12v into a 02 v10 5 speed

Postby goatchin » Mon May 17, 2010 7:29 pm

The body on our '89 cummins has fallen out from around it (as expected), this truck is a 5 speed getrag 2wd, NIC. I have found a donor truck, a 2002 2500 v10 5 speed that I would like to put the 12 valve into. Has anybody done this on here? Here is what I know I need to change so far.

2nd gen motor mounts
exhaust system (upgrading it)
fuel system-lines and tank?
-will a tank from gas truck be usable with diesel fuel? heard mixed comments on this
Radiator-using same one from '89
??conversion plate to nv4500??

My main question right now is what is needed when putting a 1st gen infront of a nv4500?? Is it just an adapter plate or do I need a different bellhousing?

What kind of electrical nightmares am I going to run into, even though 1st gens have little electric. Any problems with PCM or KSB.

Right now I just want to know what I need to get the motor in the truck in stock form, then go from there. I will though be installing the KDP kit, 5th gear upgrade, upgrade clutch while all is apart.

Lets hear what yall got to say, am i missing anything or should know about anything? Give me a warm welcome :D

I have never seen the v-10 4500, if it is same input as diesel app you will need the second gen flywheel housing. On our trucks the opening in the fuel tank is the same between diesel and gasser, so you can switch the diesel fuel pickup, no idee on the 2002, you'll have to pull the tank and check. The v-10 has the intank pump, pretty sure you cannot use that, pressure would be too high. The heater grid you could put on a switch and a relay, not sure about how to control ksb, guys have been known to remove it so it's no biggy.
93 w250 6 speed 4" exhaust, caution, work truck, she's no beauty. building 1 ton dually 4x4, dana 80, 48rh, 205 Scratch the one ton, bought frt. dually 4x4 98 12 valve with the tiny rear doors. rides so much better than the 93.

Your first and biggest nightmare may be passing your states emissions inspection.
Strike #1 is using an older engine in a newer chassis. Normally you can build an " exact clone" of the newer truck as it was built by the factory in its diesel configuration but most states prohibit the retrofitting of any older engine, gas or diesel, into a newer chassis. Check with your emissions inspection station before you take anything apart.

Bob hit the nail on the head, you won't be able to get it inspected! The DMV computer at the inspection station thinks its a gasser, and Albany won't pass it. :(

Sorry I didn't catch this when you 1st posted it.
