24 valve into 91 reg cab w/12 valve auto

Postby morinscummins » Wed Aug 18, 2010 3:24 pm

hey guys, i recently laid my hands on a 24 valve out of a school bus, i have a 1991 with the 12 valve ve pump, the 24 valve has been sitting for some time, im thinking of building the 24 valve from block up and installing it into the first gen, any and all input would be great, also if any of you know a former post about this type of swap please let me know, i know the engine install itself should go without a hitch, my primary concern is going to be the electrical aspect.
much appreciated

Not just the electrical, you also have the wonderful  VP44 injection pump that will siht itself if it even thinks it's not getting enough fuel. I'm in the process of changing 1 for my buddy and it was $1000 for it. That's not counting the $500 for the Air Dog to make sure it has enough fuel in the future.
You can't even swap the 12v head to it because the bolt pattern is different. They make P-pump conversions for the 24v trucks, but those are way stupid priced. I think somebody told me it was either $2 or $3k for the kit, not counting the IP.

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

X2 on that vPOS44 but the p pump idea might not be that bad of a deal. That combo makes BIG power from what I have read in those mags like Diesel Power.

Or do something different and install the VE on to it... :D

You didn't say if its a early 24v (VP, rotary) or later 24v with the CP3 CR?

doesnt RonA have a 24v 1st gen? iirc its a p-pump twin turbo truck and runs 11's.

its doable, but i would question going to a vp44 for a dd/tow rig.

ok, i got the engine for nothing, its going to need a complete rebuild, anyways im planning on ridding of the electronic pump idk whether or not its a vp44,anyways, i have a line on a p7100 injection pump, and also i have a line on a pretty much do it yourself parts list for the conversion, the trade school i went to has left me in some good terms with guys in the central and western ny area for machine/performance work

well keep in mind that the injector lines need to be custom and u no longer have the option of having a mechanical lift pump on the side of the block......i think what were all getting to is that u should just build up the ve motor ....its way cooler

a while back i read a thread where a gu put a ve pump into a 24 valve , it was a almost direct bolt on , and really only needed adapters to hook the ve up to the vp44 injection lines ...... ( besides lowering the pop presure of the injectors ) .

That's kinda hard to believe, the direct bolt on part. The VP has 4 mounting bolts and the VE has 3. And we know how much work it is to change the case, direct, it ain't! ;)

Not having a mechanical lift pump isn't necessarily a bad thing.
"Make oil" once, and you'll see my reasoning on that, very quickly.

As soon as I can lay hands on a 24 valve longblock, this is EXACTLY what I plan to do, VE pump a 24 valve.
I've eyeballed it and the pump rotation and firing order are the same, the lines are up to being adapted and I have a machine shop willing to work with me on machining up the adaptors.

Tired of people on certain sites dissing down the VE, and I want something that's definitely beyond "different".

Wonder if the 24 valve will have the sound as it does with a vp44 bolted to it.
