powerstroke converted to P-Pump ?

Postby jethro » Sat Feb 23, 2019 10:04 pm

I read today in one of the diesel mags--- that somebody was taking a truck they built to some show -- and it was a powerstroke with
a P-Pump. Got to thinking about that as an idea. Seems like if you got RID of that STUPID hydraulic injection system you might be able to have a useable engine. So if you could run a P-Pump that would wipe out all the bad Ford stuff -----
But our pumps are 4 and 6 piston units. Did they use a P-Pump from some other application that has 8 cylinders ?
I wonder what they drive the pump off of - wonder how hard that was ????

Just wondering !

Custom everything, from Injector mounting in the heads, and a from scratch gear setup off the crank to run the pump, probably off a mack V8 or something. Very very expensive. Likely all or most of the internals have to be replaced to handle any decent amount of power, unless you are building a 300 HP or less engine. And you still end up with a V8 that doesn't have the low end torque characteristics of an inline that better match the burn speed/efficiency of diesel. They would be easier on drivelines though. I think I remember reading about a power stroke based mechanical V8 sled puller a few years ago with over 2000 hp, pretty sure it was over 100K into the engine alone. Pretty sure I've seen a mechanically injected D-max on utube as well.

great point on Torque--- they may have more RPM but Torque is king.
Maybe we need a straight 8 cylinder cummins.... like a mini locomotive engine :-)
Probably difficult to make a crank to stand that job.....
