83 d50 diesel!

Postby sb91ctd » Tue Sep 27, 2011 7:39 pm

ok guys i have a chance to buy an 83 d50 4wd 5sp with the 2.3 TURBO 8) diesel. It needs a few cosmetic things but mechanically is suppose to be fine. Im pretty much looking at it for economy and for the fact that you see one of these on the road as often as a diesel chevette lol. If any of you have any input on this at all whether to avoid it or hell yes get it lol i would appreciate it.

thanks
Steve

My dad had a few diesel datsuns, if the stories of 43 and 45 miles per gallon are true then you may have something similar there. If that true then it will be the proverbial "gold monkey"

I've driven a few of the 2.3 Turbo diesels, and they are peppy for what they are, considering they are what, 80hp?. I would guess mpgs in the high 20s to low 30s, from people I have talked to in the past. They do have a VE pump....

Thanks for the input guys but i passed it up a while ago. On second thought i shouldve bought it, it wouldve been awesome, not just for the 4wd but the 5sp but being turbo and diesel for dirt cheap. Oh well you live and learn i suppose lol

i know this is a old thread , but I do have some experience with this motor .

dodge used the 2.3 Mitsubishi motor for a couple years then in 1985 ford put them in their rangers until 1987

run away from these engines they are pieces of crap .
look sideways at them and the head gasket fails , or the head cracks . used parts where hard to come by 20 years ago . and the millage really wasn't that much better than fords 4 cylinder gas engine .
a vw diesel can be turned way past the mitsu's power levels and still be very reliable
