D4H Dozer

Postby collegekid » Wed Nov 02, 2011 6:00 pm

Looking into buying a D4H (cant remember the year) its got 4000 hours on it, was originally owned by the EPA for clearing around refineries. It has the 10' 6-way blade on front and hydraulic winch on back with 30" wide LGP tracks and a 90% undercarriage. The bad news is, it caught fire under the drivers seat and melted the whole harness all the rubber shift knobs, owner says engine didnt get too hot, but the fire was directly above the tranny. Im not an expert on cats but im getting it at scrap price, anyone know what I should look for, test, is it worth fixing up and using for a couple hundred hours then selling.

If its not bad fix it for sure. I had a D3B a few years back with double those hours on it and it sold for 15k or there abouts. I have a JD 450 G right now and thats worth more. A D4 is bigger then both.

O yes, equipment can be crazy. Starters can be over a grand, water pumps over a grand, trannies way over 10 k. My thermostat in my boat was over a hundred bucks. They have you coming and going. Just put a reman power steering pump on my 3406b, over 600 bucks for just the bare pump. Any marine and heavy equipment cost major bucks. I guess its up to you, but for scrap price, I would jump on it, and if its total junk, scrap it and break even. I know you could part it and do good. Just a final drive is 6 to 10 grand for a new one. I could go on forever.

might as well in my opinion, you can alway rig somethin up jus to see if it runs and moves, if not then take it to the right scrap yard and maybe even make a little more

As long as it's not a "new" dozer, you can cobble it to run just the same as you can our old trucks. The thing I'd worry about is how much hydraulic stuff got burnt up. Hoses/fittings aren't cheap, and those things are covered in them.

If you're getting it for scrap price I don't see how it could hurt to grab it and tinker with it when you have time. If you get bored, just scrap it and only be out some time.

Im pretty sure it burnt up a couple if not all of the hoses, and what my main concern is that it burnt the hydraulic valves up

Ive done 2 Huff loaders that were in fires. take your time and look it over before you jump on it. wiring is easy, hoses cost money, and will stress you out after the 5th time you have dumped 5 gallons of hyd oil over the ground with that hose that you "thought" was ok.

we can make our own hoses, but parker charges $$$, just dont let yourself get in over your head

What about the hydraulic valves, like what your joysticks connect to? The wiring will be a pain, but i can do it, the hoses will be expensive, but I can do it, the valves and pumps are whats worrying me, those seem to be pricey and If I can rebuild them great, if not, ill have to weigh that option, but what things in the valves should I look for

just give them a once over, if they move freely then you are probably ok, they arnt hard to rebuild (simple ones)

I wouldn't be afraid of the damage done by the fire a few hundred dollars worth of hoses (most cat hoses have reusable ends) and a little wiring and you will be good to go. Cat made a bunch of those machines and a used part or two should be easy enough to come up with. If a private party owned it I would be worried about what else was wrong with it to cause the insurance papers to catch fire under the seat but, since it was a government agency machine they don't have a problem running out of money to repair stuff they just print more when they need it. If you don't want it I mIght be intersted in it. Rocky
