3126 cat issues

Postby Cschafer » Tue Jan 24, 2012 5:33 pm

Just bought a 98 c6500 rollback with the 3126 cat in it. Ran fine when I bought it. Let it sit for 4 days while i painted it and had troubles starting it. It was sitting in a 50 degree shop the whole time. It cranked a long time when it did start it ran real rough then died and wouldn't start. I let it sit for a while and it started ran real rough for a while and was theroly heat soaked before running correct. I've ran it everyday since without any issues till a couple days ago I noticed a slight miss while it was warming up. More like a quick blip once and a while. I checked lift pump pressure was 60 psi. I then changed both fuel filters. I primed with the hand pump till fuel came out the bolt hole on filter housing and tried to start it. truck did not even atempt to run. No bark no run for a few seconds and die, nothing. kept pumping the hand primer whith no sucsess. I pressurised the fuel tank and could not get fuel out the open port. About an hour of pressurizing the tank and breaking fuel lines apart all the way to the secondary filter and it started right up. Now the truck is running worse. Intermiten misses at all temps, throttle positions, loads, gears (6spd) rpm ect. no rhyme or reason. When it blips it's like someone turned the ignition off on a gasser very quickley. sometimes once every few seconds sometimes once in 10 miles. No check engine lights or stored codes. Any idea's? Any body got an sae bellhousing and flywheel for a 12 valve?

All I can say is best of luck to ya, at work we support a fleet of trucks that run 3116, 3126, 3176 and C7's, and it is a constant battle to keep them operational. I am fond of most Caterpillar engines, but those can give ya a real headache

it really sounds like it is taking in air somewhere down the line. The hard start and rough idle makes me think its losing prime when you shut it off. That just my opinion though!

The fact that you pressurized the tank amd still couldn't get fuel to it, you need to be looking at the tank and lines. 3126 cat, 5.9 cummins, 3.5 briggs and stratton all gotta have fuel to run. What kind of tank and where is it mounted? Are you sure the lift pump is keeping the injection pump pressurized? Is there something in the tank restricting the fuel from leaving the tank(you'd be amazed what i've pulled out of fuel tanks coins, marbles, light bulbs{broken and whole} condoms, and small dead animals? Dont be afraid to hook up another tank closer to the engine to verify the problem. You mentioned it is a rollback make sure the fuel line isn't mashed somewhere. A no run no start can be very frustrating and time consuming, many times it is something simple and obvious that you look right past.
Good luck, Rocky
