4bt knock knock knock

Postby m880cummins » Fri Dec 07, 2012 11:53 pm

:bom: ?

Got it running tonight. Oil system was primed, ran like a champ until I builded some boost for the second time at the end. It has a 3200 rpm spring, pump screws turned, ground pin, WH1C. Also, how bout the smoke coming from the breather?!?!

First crank with a stutter:

Where was your temporary cooling system? You should NEVER run a 4BT for more than 30 seconds without a cooling system of some kind in place. Then it should be allowed to cool down and equalize temperatures between the block and head. My guesses would be you possibly blew the head gasket, possibly warped or cracked the head, or scored/melted a piston and cylinder, probably #4. You were correct that it ran fine and was a good engine in the beginning of your video.

The previous owner had the oil pump break and he shut it down. I put a new pump in, primed it and then mounted a mechanical oil pressure gauge. It put out 10 psi cranking... Old oil pump broke by the idler gear. We managed to pick out all the pieces without dropping the pan. No shavings or anything and all gears were nice. Thought we were lucky. Guess not.

What you have there doesn't sound like the effect of a previously damaged oil pump. Liquid cooled engines are not air cooled engines.

Charlie, did you ever tear into this and see what happened? Get it running again?
pete

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.
