Takes what to beat a 7.3

Postby spencerdiesel » Wed Nov 18, 2015 8:01 am

Hey there, my bud has an OBS stroker ('97) 4x4 zf5 with 6 pos. chip, 3in to 5in straight pipe, and minor intake mods.

I know the OBS 7.3s were non IC and have smaller injectors than the super dutys, I've heard roughly 280 rwhp is doable on stock injectors.

So what do these trucks weigh for a extended cab extended bed? I liked the way his truck ran on the hot tune.

Cuz our dodges are a little lighter, what rwhp would it take for me to be as quick as his?

Mine weighed in at 7k on the nose with full tank.

Takes almost nothing. Those OBS 7.3 are the slowest creatures on earth. I beat my buddy in his 96 auto while driving my 1988 Toyota pickup on the freeway. Thats how slow they are.

Hahaha ok. His truck got totaled, and now he's got a 97 built auto single cab. Same mods done to it and I timed it at 7.8 sec 0-60. Not gonna race the new slushbox equipped truck

So first off, I apologize because ya'll were right :) The video he sent me that I timed must have been down a 12% grade, because he let me drive it and it runs a 10 sec 0-60.......

His converter stays locked in direct and OD down to 1800ish rpm, and it's a 4.10 truck like mine. So that makes the comparison a bit more accurate to my 5 speed.

There's a 10% grade 1/4 mile long hill I always do my WOT tests on. Starting the hill at 45 in 4th and letting out before the hill starts to round off, my truck hit 61 mph.

Same day same variables, his truck locked in direct starting at 45 hit 63 mph. That's with 3" to 5" straight pipe, updated compressor wheel, and 6 pos chip on 140 (hottest) tune.

So if my 40 hp-over-stock truck almost stays with his "140 over stock" truck, that tune adds not even close to 140 horse.........stock HPOP not keeping up you think?

I did that once when I dropped my counter shaft, and had to start out in 4th. Boy did it ever smell of clutch after that

Yep but mine suffered from my peer pressure based stupidity

Ill turn her up till she starts slipping, then back off a half turn or so. What hp do most of the factory clutches make it to before they slip?

Nah, just joking. ;) Mine was pretty good for a long time. Like you've experienced, if you slip them they get glazed and don't hold as well.

Well dang I was hoping I had someone in the same boat as me :D
It doesn't slip any right now, but it's scary how much higher up the pedal is when it engages now

If they haven't been slipped they can hold close to 400. Once slipped a bit less. I know I was at that point with the silver bullet 62. I had to change my driving style to keep it from slipping any more (basically just easing into it after a shift did the trick)
