Mitsubishi 4D55T runs, but not very well.

Hey maybe you guys can help me out with this one!

Truck in question is an '88 Dodge Raider that has been repowered with a 4d55t turbo diesel engine from an '83 Dodge Ram 50. Engine starts very easy. However it idles kinda rough and spits and sputters like crazy during acceleration until it "catches its breath" above a certain RPM, then takes off like crazy. Also emits lotsa white or black smoke in the process, depending on speed. I tried Diesel Purging it, and that helped only a little. I'm thinking worn injectors and/or a frazzled valve (my wife set the valve lash on it, and she found one cylinder that was set way too tight).

Any suggestions?

Also, I cannot hear the turbo spooling on this thing. Should I be able to? (Yes, it *is* spinning when running. I took the intake hose off and verified that.)

TIA,
Don

Have you checked your fuel timing? A too-far retarded or advanced timing set, would give you those symptoms you are describing.
