Needing some help with an N-14

Postby peytonmaterne » Fri Aug 28, 2009 7:55 am

Neighbor has a mid 90s White/GMC Volvo wannabe. N-14 that hasn't been started for a year. We charged the batteries and are cranking over but we have no power at the fuel shut off solenoid. We checked all the fuses in the cab. Are there any external fuses? Can we run a seperate wire to the solenoid to let it run or does the computer need to see a signal from the solenoid?

If it is an old enough n-14 it is a mechanical and you can just put 12V to the solenoid to get it to run. If it is a later one it is electronic controlled by the computer and you will have to start there.

Hey KTA, it is an electronic engine. I think he said it is a 95, anywho it has the computer on the drivers side of the engine.

If the ECM is receiving power but not outputting power to the pump or injectors then it won't run and most likely has a failed ecm or a bad crank position sensor. You can either hookup the cummins laptop to diag. the problem or go borrow the parts from a running unit and switch them out to find the problem. Check to make sure the ECM is getting power 1st though!

check the fuse in the batt box and the wire that goes from the batts to the ecm. almost all of our old volvo vn670's had that wire rubbed through in several spots. the wire from the ecm to the fuel shut off always rubbed through and broke too.

There is a red cable with a large inline fuse in the battery box, and it had rubbed almost completely through where it comes thru the hole in the battery box. The two fuses around the starter looked OK but I replaced them anyway. I will fix that cable and go from ther I guess. Thanks for the help thus far.

Well, I got the cable fixed that I mentioned previously. This cable and a white one run up to the back of the head where they branch off feeding various wires. I still have no power at the shutoff solenoid. How and where do I check for power on the ecm?
