Need a little help for my friend

Postby SOOT4BRAINS » Tue Dec 29, 2009 9:46 pm

A buddy of mine has an 84 ford with a 6.9 international in it. It needs a new oil cooler. I have been trying to find one for him, but only one I can find is from the dealer and they want over a grand for it. Thought it couldn't hurt to post up on here and see if anybody knows where to get one. He told me it has a tube like cooler and 2 end tank pieces that attach to the engine. He really wants to do a 12 valve conversion but its not in budget and needs his truck back. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!!

Is the problem in his cooler itself, or just the gaskets? If I'm not mistaken, the coolers were the same on all 6.9s and 7.3s, so that may open up your options.

Have you tried a Navistar dealer? Kinda like bypassing Dodge to go to Cummins.

I have not actually seen it yet, but he told me it was pushing oil into the antifreeze. Can it do that with just bad gaskets? I will look into a navistar dealer locally, thanks for the reply.

Yes it can be just gaskets. Anytime you have oil and antifreeze seperated within a common housing (think head gasket- it blows, and sometimes mixes oil and water) the potential exists for fluid swapping if a gasket/ seal fails.

I'd think a radiator shop would be able to pressure test the cooler once you get it out.

He has it out, not sure if he has tested it. Did some internet searching, I can't find a navistar dealer online. Guess I'll start calling around to truck dealers.
