Chevy 6.2 diesel Need help and advice

Postby Stx123 » Tue Feb 02, 2010 12:23 pm

I know I might get some hard times about this but I would like to know what everyone thinks of chevy 6.2 diesel (Note I know they are far from comparable to a real diesel). I am looking at 1984 chevy k-20 with the 6.2 diesel with a auto (tubro 400) 4x4. Dont worry its not for me I would never give up my cummins but my wife wants a truck and she loves the old chevys. I was looking for a 350 or 454 gas but I found this truck with the 6.2 and the truck has a mint body (which is getting harder to find and has been well cared for) This will not be a daily driver it may be used on the weekends or playing around. Plans for a 6 inch lift and 35's are in the future for the wifes new toy. The plan would be to run the truck as is now and build is slowly. Im sure there would be a built V-8 gas in the furture for this project but the truck has the right price and right parts and nice body for my wife project (except I know nothing about the 6.2 diesel I read that they can be realable but lack power. Any info you might have would help. Thank you.
1991 Dodge Cummins W-250 5 speed bone stock except it was made into a dually and all 1 ton parts were added. So it want to be called W-350 but tilte says 250 Needs work like a complete cab and paint. Its a project. 285000+

They have no power, start harder then a lawn mower under water, and don't last very long. If its cold out forget about getting it going. I had a boss that had a fairly new one and it was a piece of crap. He had the heads off it twice, wore out the flywheel from cranking it all day long. Once it was going it was fine other then low power. We used to leave it running all day while we worked because even after it was hot the stupid thing would crank forever before going. Keep starting fluid handy.

use the 6.2 as a bargaining point to bring the price down. they are gutless, but dont have enough power to break stuff in the drivetrain. some dude around here swears by them for plow trucks for this very reason.

last truck i has was a 6.2...there pretty bullit proof but thats only cause they have no power with an auto it might not be bad they are decently tourqey....but overall a big piece of dump....will run forever tho...i put a turbo kit on mine..made 7psi and i kept it there because otherwise it would blow the headgasket

darn goodlooking truck tho

Our old 6.2 at the shop always started when cold. If it won't start the glow plugs probably aren't working. They get great fuel mileage, better than the Cummins in my experience, but have absolutely no power to do anyhting except haul themselves around.

The 6.2's are gutless wonders. I think there is something in a year change about some sensor on the IP that constantly went out.... Maybe the 6.5L?

Make sure it always is plugged in, keep starting fluid handy, and if you tow ANYTHING with it, get a Heath Diesel water pump upgrade.

Also sometime in the middle of production, they went from 5 head bolts per cylinder to 6 per cylinder according to a old Chevy mechanic/nut.

Buy it, and find your self a bread truck with a 4bt in it. They usually had a turbo 400 too. Just swap the 4bt and the converter to the chev, and you're styling! 8)

Just enough power to break everything behind the crankshaft.

I had a 6.2 in my last truck. Before changing the injection pump it would get 28 MPG highway and 22+ local. It sounded like a gasser before I put in a newer '92 DB2 injection pump and injectors. Don't go wild with advancing the timing because that generally has a tendency to crack the crankshaft webbing in the block. Mine had 1 head replaced before I got it at just under 100K miles. I still have it and if I live long enough I have a 4BT Cummins set aside to replace the 6.2. Watch the crankshaft balancer as there were known issues with them.

On the 400 to the 4BT; the 4BT came with a TH475 in the retrofit vans. It does not have a vacuum modulator and is just a heavier version of the TH400. The front case is a thicker version of the 400 and it has a heavier cast aluminum pan along with a reinforced bottom bellhousing cover. If you have any interest in installing a 4 or 6 cylinder Cummins stop over and visit us at www.4btswaps.com and take a look through the "Build-ups" section for ideas.

Thanks Bob, I know it looked like a 400, I'm not up on all the chevy stuff. I can tell a SB from a BB though!

From my limited experience, and talking to owners, they were good if you wanted a full sized pickup, but didnt want full sized MPGs. I knew a farmer with an 82 or 83 1/2ton, and the thing ran forever. Some of them got outstanding fuel mileage. On a positive note, they are a step up from the old 350 diesels, just no power, and they are mechanically controlled.
