need some ford info 2006

Postby Richie O » Tue Sep 07, 2010 3:42 pm

Hey guys, a good friend of the family is looking at a 2006 ford 2 wheel peel 3/4 ton with an auto and a diesel. I know absolutly nothing about fords. Is there any reason to stay away from a 06? The guy has a 5th wheel camper and has been using a f150 so I am sure he will like the heavier truck as well as the diesel. He called and asked because he knows I have 3 cummins trucks and a dmax. I don't know anything about the thing other then it has 50 k miles on it. Like I said is there any " known " issues with that vintage?? I have never kept up with fords.

It's got a 6.uh-oh in it, plenty enough reason to stay away from it. Thing is, you don't know if you're getting a good one or a POS. Some guys trucks have lots of miles and have never been into the shop, and some trucks live there.
Scoot over to the club site and ask mike, mdub 707, he knows those things in and out, he has an '05 or '06 with tons of shop time on it. ;)

I posted there already and got some feedback. I told the guy to get the oasis report before he bought it. Thanks Pete!! ( the rag killer ) ;)

My thoughts on a 6.0 is run away from it. There is no such thing as a good one. Pawpaws might be a good one but pawpaw drives slow and he does not let it idle much. The serp belt is a PIA to change and the tensioners go bad from the weird angles it pulls on the belt. The motors run super hot cause of the egr. If it idles a lot and does the burn off thing and your parked in tall grass, u will set the grass on fire. I know a guy that's done it in a hay field while loadin hay. I don't work on them. The rest of the trucks are not that bad. The front ends hold up well. The only other thing that gives problems is the output speed sensor in the tail shaft housin in the trans. That's a easy fix. Takes five min and a 50 for the sensor.

Well, he bought it as the report from the dealer came back clean. No engine issues on file and the truck is still under warranty. He will be super easy on it with no plans of chips or any performance stuff. I guess we will see.

Ellis, the 6.4 does the regen (burn off thing) ;)

IF he does get the truck, MAKE him do a EGR delete and headstuds.

EGR is too small for the amount of flow through it and the headstuds are under sized.

Why do you think they went from a 15mm head BOLT to 19mm STUDS on the 6.4???

I am almost positive that the late 6.0 does the same. Unless the ford cert diesel mechanic at costall ford in mobile al is mistaken. Anyway like I said I don't work on that garbage ;).

The 6.4 still has TTY bolts but they look like beefy 7.3 bolts

Tell him no matter what used the motorcraft oil filters. I do fleet work for a buddies plumbing company and just sent one to Ford. I went to change a pinion seal but the truck developed a noise idleing the wanted me to look at. It's either lost a valve or has a hole in a piston by the sounds of it. It has a definite dead cylinder miss. This is the owners personal truck with 126,xxx miles on it and is bone stock. It hit 90,000 and has spent most of it's time in the shop since.

I use one for my farm truck 05 350 4x4 lariat with the 6.0, and other than unplugging the egr valve and knocking out the catalytic converter, she runs good, and I've def put her through the ringer a few times (30K of hay held at 3k rpm up a 6% grade, didn't blow up  )

The root cause of the problems with the 6.0 is that Ford didn't listen to International about what kind of coolant to put in it. International told them to put in a CAT ELC-1 silicate free coolant, Ford said hey we've got a lot of this Gold crap that we put in everything else so we are going to put it in the 6.0. The gold crap works fine in everything else, but everything else doesn't have an EGR cooler that can get up to 1250+ degrees. At that temperature the silicates drop out of the gold coolant and gell up, the gell circulates through the coolant system until it gets to the Oil cooler which has small coolant passages that do a fantastic job of filtering out the gel, but also clogs up the flow of coolant to the next component in line... the EGR cooler. The EGR cooler is then starved for coolant, boils off what little it is getting, pressurizes the coolant system, add some boost to the cylinders and the TTY (torque to yeild) head bolts stretch, and the head gaskets blow. All because Ford wanted to save a couple bucks on coolant. How do I know this? I have one sitting in my driveway that had (unbeknownst to me) blown headgaskets when I bought it. It is fixed now, at the dealer's expense, but I still think that Ford should be forced to give every 6.0 owner a new engine with the right coolant in it from the get go, or even better, make that replacement engine a 5.9 Cummins. That said, the 6.0 isn't as horrible as it is made out to be, you just have to understand what the cause of the problems is and fix it. On the plus side, the cost of aftermarket parts to remedy the issues have come way down due to demand.
