Postby 1STGENFARMBOY » Mon Nov 01, 2010 8:32 am

just bought one with the pump off and he had it checked out now we need to put in on. It's way to new for me

What engine? What pump?
If it's a cummins, just pull #1 valve cover and roll it over until the intake valve closes, then push the timing pin in when it gets to TDC. Hold the gear against the cam gear if you can so it won't jump a tooth when turning.
If it's a VE pump, it should be locked if it came from a pump shop. Just check the front of the pump, (shaft end) at about 5:00 there should be a mark, a line or arrow. The keyway will line up with this for #1. Stuff it in, bolt it up, and loosen the lock and shove in the spacer on it, and good to go.
If it's a P-Pump, on the rear outer side there's a large acorn nut, this is the lock cover. Remove it and inside there's a pin, 1 side is split, this is the lock. If it's locked, the split will be over a tab on the shaft in the pump. Same as above to TDC and install, then pull the lock pin and put it back in the opposite way, solid end in, and put the nut on.
Done!

Yes, it should be the 404 in that thing.

Timing the I/P is pretty simple.

Put the engine on TDC #1 (and make sure the gear lash is taken out of the gear train). Set the pump in the hole (only goes one way) and put the hold down nuts/bolts on it, but keep them loose enough that you can rotate the pump housing by hand. Remove the small rectangular inspection cover (2 small screws). Need to see where the timing marks are on the flywheel and set the flywheel in the correct spot BTDC that the manual calls for. IIRC, 14*BTDC on a 4010 engine and 0* on a 4020 (not sure on the combine though). Once there, rotate the pump til the timing marks in the little window are lined up. Once there, tighten the hold down nut/bolts. Reinstall the cover on the pump, and the timing is done. :D

A 4400 should have a 329 not a 404, they were saved for later 6600's.
