Project MMPG ~Slow build thread

Postby oldestof11 » Mon Feb 28, 2011 6:30 pm

I have been thinking about what it is I want to build this car for. Well, recently (as we all have seen) gas and diesel have jumped over a country who supplies less than 5% of our oil consumption. I am sitting back chuckling to myself as some guys are complaining over filling there oversized SUV's for their family. Family meaning guy+girl+1 CHILD= Need for a rather large vehicle. Complaining how it takes $70 to fill up for them to get to work each week. Yada, yada, yada, poop.

So, Project MMPG (Maximum Miles Per Gallon) starts now. What I have is a 85 VW 2dr Golf with a 1.6L NA diesel coupled to a 5spd transmission, ACH code. A good start but needs more. Currently done to it:

Larger than stock tires

I get 35mpg around town and 52 on the highway because of said tires. I am wanting something more uniform.

Here are the plans to the car:

13" Steel to replace the 14" aluminum with smaller tires (Less rotating weight. Know of any mileage savers? Donuts maybe   :alien: )
Lowering a inch or 2 (less under car turbulence)
Custom front and rear roll pan/valence (Help direct air flow)
Lose additional weight from the interior (Back seat is not even remotely used, yet. Keeping a spare and less tools)
Front/rear spacers to get rid of the tuck (Make the wheels flush with fenders for less turbulence)
Windshield high pressure area vented down and around car (Have ideas...)

Engine mods are:

Fresh head with a P&P
Custom intake POST filter
Custom intake PRE filter
Larger exhaust
Rebuilt injection pump
Rebuilt stock injectors
Timing advance bump
Inline electric lift pump
Regasket to rid of any leaks

All oils will be replaced by synthetic fluids. Everything will be grease and aligned. Tires might be hyper-inflated to seek out best MPG at times. Not all the time, just after I get a good baseline.

Will post up results and builds.

Peace

but he drives it back and forth to work (about 40 miles a day) .

If you want i can ask his some questions about how he mixes it.

I guess it takes a special kind of person to be that diciplined on getting MPG's, not busting your bubble just saing i couldent go through all that work for the sole purpose of more MPG's. Im Building an original mini cooper that I plan to drive ALOT (autocross), its got a full cage now but I've removed about enough weight to offset the cage. My sister an I drove her 78 mini to highschool for four years, we used to split the fuel money, back then (2003 ish) we could fill the six gallon tank and run the car hard each week for 12 bucks total, we would race that car and consistany get 28-32 miles a gallon. I think the big exhaust helped alot

guess I like that car because it was good on gas and even if you were going 45 it felt like you were going 90, all ive herd about the older VW diesels is they the are super super slow (no first hand experience tho)

either way, cool project, good luck

My wife drives our 03 jetta TDI 5 spd to work and 2 weekends ago i just did the timming belt, all the pullys with bearings,
serpinteen ? belt, EGR and intake manifold cleaning ( couldn't get your finger through the EGR valve) , water pump, and last
weekend i went to KC MO. to pick up a dually bed on a small trailer i made  , it went well but it was bad
top heavy, the car got 31 mpg pullin the bed, it normally gets 49 mpg going 75 mph.

it's a great car for milage but it is a very small car.

If this don't look like a hillbilly i don't know what does.

Trust me. This is NOT going to be a all MPG car. Looks, comfort, and driving are #1 right now. The goal is to find the greatest, AVERAGE mpg. Thanks to the help of VW Vortex (CF) and VW Diesel.net (1stgen), I have been able to get some help.

Need to factor in the cost of the rework, vs cost savings at the pump, if any.

I'd start with the cheaper stuff, mainly improving the air flow of the engine. Adding a turbo would simplify some things.

...then you not only have to weight the fuel saings vs cost of working over the motor...but you need to weight the minimal gains at the pump vs telling the guy with the mediocre car next to you at the pump that your has a cool reworked motor  ...at least thats always how I justify the crazy stuff I do

My mother has a 98 VW bug with the TDI and she gets 50 to 55 running around our country roads. Its her summer car so its still pretty good. Neat little car. It has good pulling power on hills and can run overdrive on most hills without losing speed.
