Cordless Impact

Postby cmann250 » Fri Dec 28, 2012 3:51 pm

The chances of getting a respectable air compressor, let alone electricity, to the only piece of concrete on the property are not good. After doing 48 lug nuts twice in the past few days, I'm wanting a cordless impact.

I'm thinking one of these: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ ... _200401307

or http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ ... _200401305

I have a few 18V DeWalt batteries, so that's a reason that I'm looking so hard at DeWalt. The reviews look good. Any input, mainly on size and power?

I love my 19.2v Craftsman. Will do anything my bosses Makita 1/2" corded impact would do.

Plus you get 400 more IPM.

I have that 18v dewalt. It does alright. I wanted it mainly to pull a hamonic ballancer off in the junkyard, and it works well enough for that. It will break lugs loose that are torqued to 100 ft-lbs with no issues. Too much more than that might be too much to for it though. I still wouldn't mind breaking them loose by hand and using this to run them off. Fwiw, I got mine off ebay for just over $100 without the battery.

Yours must be a heck of a lot better then mine. I torqued some lugs to 80ft. Lbs and it wouldn't budge them with a fully charged battery.

Snap on is salty but they have a 1/2" and 3/8" cordless in NiCd and Lithium that are very respectable in torque. Use a 3/8" NiCd every day and like it a lot. DeWalts are ok. Gotta make sure the battery is up on the DeWalts. had a bad pack once and lost a lot of torque. Lithiums are good. no power fade. longer battery life. but when they are done, they are done. they just stop, no squeezing in those last turns before you grab a wrench/rachet. more expensive too.

my snap on rep let me use one to see if i liked it. it was a 1/2". it was a bad a$$ dude, but wayyy too much money to me for it to be worth it. but if you aint got power or air, it may be worth it to you. it was the only one i had ever used, so i cant compare to others

Another vote for the Snap-On. Check eBay. They usually have a pretty good selection.

I have always wanted a Snap-on 3/8" impact, a friend of mine has four of them, they are great! I have a Dewalt 18V unit that the woman got me for Christmas, I use it on just about everything...

The Snap-On electric ones are great. The Snap-On pneumatic ones are gutless IMO. My IR pneumatic impacts will turn circles around ever Snap-On one I have ever owned.

I like the 1/2" IR impacts, got a few at work. I own a pneumatic 3/8" Snap-on impact, it works very well IMO. I also own a 1/2" Blue-Point impact, not the strongest thing in the world, but it has done just about everything I have asked it to do. If I can't get something loose with it, I just grab my 3/4" IR....

762, I have a Snap On MG3100 3/8" drive pneumatic. It's an animal. It will loosen a 5/8" nut no problem. And I don't mean 5/8 socket size, I mean 5/8 thread size. I use that instead of my IR244 1/2" drive most of the time.
I don't use them enough to justify the price of an electric impact.

Well that's definitely not my experience, but if it works for you, I can't argue with that.
