Metal chop saw abrasive blade recomendations

Postby 1992gen1_fan » Fri Mar 21, 2014 10:42 pm

What are good fast cutting abrasive blades for a metal chop saw? I was cutting some 1/2"x2" flat stock today and seemed like it took 5 minutes atleast to make 1 cut. Would just start melting the metal. I ended up using my old riobi reciprocator with a well used blade to finish the rest of my cuts which took less than a minute per cut but not as precise... Need to try some new blades for the chop saw, what works well?

I have the Dewalt metal chop saw, and have found the thicker abrasive blades works the best. The thinner ones seem to heat up and warp to fast. Granted, I'll lean into the saw abit, to get the rpm's down, cuts better IMHO.

I've used Dewalt replacements, as well as the Norton ones as well. I don't use it much anymore, since I have a porta-band, but beats a sawzall.

We use Lenox at work almost exclusively. The chop saw blades are spendy, but if you make the cuts properly, they'll last a looooong time.

And those are abrasive wheels correct? Not the carbide tipped blades? I think my saw is the wrong RPM for a carbide tipped saw.

Na, carbide. Wasn't paying attention...Blackstone makes good abrasive wheels for our portable grinders, don't know if they make anything for a chop saw...

Were you cutting on the 1/2" side or the 2" side? I've found that if you set it upright and cut the skinny way it cuts faster than laying it flat and cutting it. The other thing is if I have to cut something wide it will start to cut and then slow down, so I lean into it some more and it starts cutting faster again. I think the metal gets hard from the heat and you need to force it thru that spot.

I cut on the 2" side for a bit then flipped it up and cut on the 1/2 " side. Was alot faster on the 1/2 but the blade would get to wobbling when I put force on it when the cut would slow down. Thats correct about the heat I think. I'll try a different brand blade, maybe these just build too much heat and plug up.

For the heck of it I could try a carbide tipped blade but I'm afraid it might just spit the tips being a different RPM. Evolution and DeWalts good ones are popular in my area. I've re-sharpened them before and they last a while if you take care of them.

Walter brand is night and day compared to the Dewalt and Milwaukee wheels I've used in my 14" chop saw.

This has been my experience. I use DeWalt blades from Lowes, but that usually because that is all that's available on a Sunday at 7:00pm when I discover my existing blade is shot.

I was thinking about this today while I was cutting something at work. Matthew said the thinner blades heat up and it warps. I think it cuts crooked when you apply too much pressure and it flexes the blade.

Its not just the heat, I've noticed just letting the blade spin up, like right after starting the saw, blade starts to sing, and when it starts to cut, kind just goes where it wants. Seems like even thin metal like exhaust pipe, it cuts crooked, let alone a chunk or 3x4 CRS
I've just found the thicker ones work better for me, but I don't use it as much anymore, so it suffers the home depot treatment, need a blade buy what they have.
