I had that same deal in college but with snap on and Mac it was only 50% of what was on the tool list. Matco on the other hand was 50% off everything so that made my decision easier. Craftsman ratchets suck balls. I don't know how many 1\2" ratchets I've broke on simple stuff.

My bud told me today he's been through 2 3/8 drive CM ratchets in no time.

Might shoot for Kobalt when the big set goes on sale. There's just too many Lowes here not to

I used to buy off the truck when I worked at a shop. Now that I've got my own shop I've bought a bunch of husky tools and even Stanley. I use the cheap kits for throwing in the truck to fix stuff on the road. I hate to say it but I haven't broken a Stanley rachet yet and I've tried. Lately I've been buying napa tools, they aren't the cheapest but I'm there almost daily so I actually get them replaced. I think that's the most important thing is having it handy to get the warranty out of it. I'd rather have a cheaper tool box full of decent quality tools, then one half full of tool truck tools that I'm making payments on. For what a snap on box costs I can throw my cheap boxes out and replace them ten times in my career.

Looking for yall's recommendations on an air compressor to keep in the basement, primarily to air tires but It would be nice if i could possibly run an impact.......anything decent (new or used) for around $300

Thank yall

Best bet is to watch craigslist for one. If you find one, go look at it, then hear it run from startup to shut off, then on again. If anything is wrong with the motor it will show just before it shuts off or when it restarts. That's when the most load is on it.
I had an 8 gallon Harbor Freight one that lasted for years blowing up tires and running the air wrench for lug nuts and other small jobs. It finally puked, there was a tiny 18ga single strand wire inside on the motor. I think it was supposed to be the fusible link or something, It burned off. I twisted it back on and got another year or so out of it before it died again. That time I decided to hook up my 30 gallon upright.

Thanks Pete, that's good cause I didn't know any of that haha. Are all Snap on branded air compressors just badged Chinese units? There's a 20 gallon "snapon" compressor on c-list for $180 10 miles from me.

Also, the craftsman club is showing a 26 gal air compressor that comes with an impact (don't know if 3/8 or 1/2) and a pneumatic ratchet for $299. How is the quality on cman air compressors, hopefully better than their modern hand tools?

I've had little luck with craftsman air compressors. Most notably the direct drive oil free ones. I burnt three up here at the house trying to use it as a "real" air compressor with hvlp spray guns and impacts. If the compressor your looking at is that style......I suggest you look elsewhere if you intend it for heavy use.

If it doesn't have a belt and a compressor head with an oil sump,it won't last.

I have a mix of tools...craftsman, mac, snap-on, husky, and other brands and no name stuff. Majority of my stuff though is older craftsman...15-20 years or older and made in the USA. The newer craftsman stuff is from over seas manufacture and of lesser quality from what I've seen and heard.

Ended up getting a little 10 gallon Husky compressor that is oil lubed, it seems to do alright for airing tires. Glad I got a non oil-free unit, thanks yall because I probably would have bought that crapsman oil-free if I hadn't known.

I like older craftsman tools, thrashingcows it does seem like craftsman over about 15ish years old is good quality stuff, what year did it start going downhill?

On wrenches, the newest SO wrenches seem to have thicker/bigger jaws and box ends than older ones. Is the tool steel these days not as good, and theyre having to make jaws thicker? The whole reason I wanted SO wrenches was that they are stronger and yet thinner too to fit in tight spaces?

Over the months past......well I bought bunch of stuff. Im down to about the last $500 or so of my student discount, and I'm wondering about air tools? Does snapon outsource air like most everyone else or do they make their own?

Ashamed to admit that the only pneumatic things I've got are a 3/8" gun....actually thats it. I like chrome and hand tools so guess where all the $ went. If nothing else I'll support the local cornwell guy after I graduate and haven't made pneumatic decisions.

Thanks ya'll

I buy pneumatics all over and have decided cheap is junk. I have an IR 1/2 air wrench that came from Harbor Freight, and it doesn't have the ass that my coworkers Mac does. IR makes them for Mac. I don't know if mine is a 2nd, or just cheaper. It should be the same thing but doesn't have it. I bought a used Snap On 3/8 from e-bay, an MG3100 IIRC. That thing will out perform my 1/2 inch. Just after I got it I used it to remove some 5/8ths bolts, (5/8 thread, not head size) tore them right out no problem. HF air saw, junk. HF 3" cut off tool, no ass, bought a Mac from the guy that retired, cuts like stuff is butter.
Definitely name brand stuff is better quality and works better. Figure out what you have to have, and spend the money, then you can fill in with off brand for the stuff you don't use as often.

Thanks Pete. I think I will use the last bit of discount for some grinders and carbide burr bits then

Yeah! Die grinders! Those are expensive and you need some hp when you are grinding. I think I'd get the burrs from someplace else. I got some Tektons (think I spelled that right) from the rambling tool guy. They seem to work pretty good. I got 8 or 10 of various sizes in a plastic tray for about $60. Snap On doesn't warranty the burrs, so why buy there for big bucks if they don't replace them if they break? ;)
Maybe an air chisel (hammer?). I have an HF one of those, but I barely use it. Mostly for removing hard blacktop from a paver so I can fix it. Maybe once or twice a year. If I used it more I'd have a good one.

That price and snapon doesn't warranty a broken burr bit  Is it that way with all the tool truck brands?

All tool brands don't warranty burr/ drill bits or easy outs, taps and die's.
