Pump issues...

Postby CumminsPower59 » Mon Jul 08, 2013 7:09 am

Well, since I haven't had too many replies on the pump issue on my build thread, figured I would post them here. The original pump (non-ic) on my 91 ran well before the re-seal, and does ok now, but there are a few things that have baffled me...

1. The idle wanders about 50rpm...hunts up and down constantly. Idle is set at 750 rpm's. About 10% of the time, it will idle normal.

2. When letting off the throttle, i.e., side-stepping, the rpm's come down normally, but continue south to the point that the engine dies, or very close...it will stumble and then instantly shoot back up to idle. The higher the rpm's, the more the engine will go towards 0rpm's when letting off the throttle.

3. At higher rpm's, 2000 and up, it will miss, with the miss severity increasing with rpm's and throttle input/load. If I am hard on the throttle, it shakes the truck pretty good, if I am easy on it, I can definatley tell it's there, but not bad.

4. When I ease into the trottle, it will do nothing for the first bit of movement, and then "catch" and act natually. Kind of like it is binding, but every point of the throttle linkage works smoothly, and has no catches, snags, or points that bind.

There isn't any air getting into the system from the supply side, as I have ran clear tubing just before the lift pump verifying a nice, air free fuel feed.

Even though I bought another pump to swap on, this thing is driving me nuts.

Any suggestions :?:

It sounds like a governor issue to me........ possibly the "fuel rack"(if you will) is off and it's causing the governor to not be smooth........similar to a runaway situation.

Wwhat lift pump are you running?? Until I switched to the airdog I'm running now, I could get the same symptom as #2.
I think that problem is unrelated to the others you described, and by not side stepping you may cure it on it's own.

RC, that makes sense...

Sutter, I am running one of RC's low pressure piston lift pumps. As for side stepping, I have gotten pretty good at using two feet to run three pedals at the same time

I think what Eric is asking..........when you "side step" are you immediately just letting off as fast as possible from wot, or are you in a non boost situation like idle just letting off and it dies?

All said and done, that may be irrelevant right now because it has other issues.

I haven't even got the boost up much past 8-10 psi, the thing shakes pretty good...but it seems the higher the rpm's, the more it dips towards 0rpms. It will idle down and catch if I run it up in neutral, but it really does it or dies when I am driving it...

Did you get it fixed?
If yes what did you end up doing (new or rebuilt injector pump)?
I am having some of the problems you are having.
Mainly at idle/low rpms and after letting off (slowing down), it has not died yet but close.

I haven't had much time to actually get into it and see what's up, I ended up swapping on a 184 pump for the time being...
