It was recently pointed out to me our truck's suspension is designed to work with basic hydraulic shocks. When you consider the pressure one has to apply to compress a gas-charged shock, you might recognize the 40 ~ 50 lb preload the shocks present (each) to the suspension. That throws things off.
I am NOT suggesting the gas-charged shocks (and the benefit the technology presents) are plain wrong. It's just that, like everything else, it depends on what you expect/want.
I just removed my Bilsteins and replaced them with some ProComp ES3000. As such, my ride is not quite as "Stiff". There's definitely a reduction in the roar in the steering-wheel presented by a rough black-top road (rough as in larger pea-gravel adhered to the surface).
The change accomplished my goal of smoothing the ride with the added bonus of less road noise.
For my 1993 W250 CC, I used two EXP-321506, and two EXP-329503 (all four are standard hydraulic) as purchased from Summit @ $ 41.99 ea.

At the end of the day, the truck still rides like a straight-axle /leaf-spring truck.
